The live feed of the Kisatchie eagle nest has shown lots of fish. Some are flapping when the parent brings them in. Many have been red ears which should not be shallow yet. Are they catching mostly injured/dying fish or are they that good at it like an Osprey?

I’m no expert, but I’m pretty sure they’re as good and probably better at fishing than an osprey.

In my experience watching them I'd say Ospreys are slayers compared to an eagle.

Eagles eat mostly dead or dying fish and will eat carrion on occasion.

They’re not as agile as an osprey, but they’re as good at fishing as an osprey. They just dont look as cool doing it. And yeah, ospreys eat only fish while eagles eat a lot of other shite. But eagles will steal the fish an osprey catches and probably eat the osprey too if given the chance.

Advantage eagle.

a friend of mine lived on Lake Livington in East Texas and could not stand the Eagles. He swore they were worse than vultures. Often times the eagles would swoop down on fish just for the thrill of the kill. He threatened to kill everyone he saw since he was an avid fisherman. He said seeing them for the first time was cool. After constantly seeing the eagles raid the waters of fish it got real old. Pretty sure people in Alaska feel the same way

I seen one grab a dead hooded merganser in front of the duck blind once. It can have em, we didn’t want to claim the sawbill anyway.

I watched two osprey fighting a bald eagle by the Chesapeake bay. The eagle backed himself against a big pine tree as the osprey swooped all around him. They were the aggessors.

A lady on Lake Hamilton in Arkansas told us about some eagles coming in their yard and massacring a bunch of squirrels that had nests there. She said it was horrific (but I wouldn’t mind seeing it myself).

Thanks for the video. I watched an Osprey nail a fish from way up Here at the lake I live on. Suicide dive, came up with the fish, back to the nest.
My wife watched an eagle try to nail a grebe but the little sucker kept diving before the eagle could get there.

The food I see eagles get seemed to be dead fish lying on top of the water where ospreys break the water and actually catch live fish. I've seen eagles chase geese and circle above a wounded canvasback bobbing up and down in the water. I'm on team osprey.

Bald eagles are BUMS of the bird of pray world they steal fish from others birds of pray so many smaller BOP they just snatch their catches from others they are master thieves. An amazing Bird of Pray but they are bums I love watching all of them hunt and fish
From the Audubon Society
“carrion is usually their primary source of red meat. In other words, Bald Eagles are a little picky—but mostly they’re just lazy. That’s why they tend to hang around garbage dumps (a great place to take your friends birding).”
“ So, just to review, here’s a simplified take on a Bald Eagle’s tasting preferences:

Anything they don’t have to chase.
Fish.
Birds.
Everything else, including Mr. Whiskers.

Bald Eagles are primarily fish eagles.

I have seen them fish a bass pond before. Saw one drop a 3-4 .lb bass once in it. Ospreys seem like they are more efficient.

Seems as though the Bald Eagle is more of an opportunistic hunter. I’ve seen them on gut piles in Northern New Mexico and the Decorah Eagles built their nest next to a fish hatchery. Seems the Osprey are more attuned to fish hunting.
