about 10 years ago my stepdad got a yellow lab from a friend. Dog was trained to hunt, had papers & everything. Dog got heartworms & the owner didn't want to use the dog for hunting, so he gave it to my stepdad. anyway, the dog was never used for hunting. She has just been a inside dog from the day she got to our house.

What are the chances that I can get the dog to fetch some birds this season? The dog is still very active & loves to play fetch. with a little work will she be good to go, or do I need to get myself another dog?

I would think she'd retrieve just because its her nature. She may not listen too well though. Better have lots of patience with her or not care if she loses birds.

Is she gun shy?
I would find this out before i took her. If she's not i'd at least try her

She probably wouldn't be able to handle blind retrieves, but if she can mark well enough, that would be a good start.

yes she hunted but it was over 10 years ago when she was only 1 year old.

Ever since rits the dog is absolutely terrified of thunder & rain, so this may not be a good idea. LOL

I'm sure it will fetch some birds. It would most likely take a good bit of work, especially with a 10 year old dog that is probably set in her ways right now.

I've known dogs to be scared of thunder/lightning but paid no attention to a gun.

This is my dog.
You will have to be very patient with the dog the first few trips.

option #2: I have a 2 year old doberman that is smart as hell. He can open all the doors in our house to let himself outside. What are the chances I can use my doberman as a retriever?

Option #3 buy a puppy and train it.
Option #4 buy a started dog.
Option #5 buy a finished dog.

You can use a mule to retrieve ducks if you can teach it to swim out there and bring the duck back.

My dog acts like a wuss during thunderstorms, but could care less about a gun. The noise isn't what scares him.

I've got my 5 year old to use as a backup if the dog doesn't work out. We hunt ricefields, so there isn't much standing water...

At 10yrs old you would really need to condition that dog. That's an old lab and I would think that you would really want to get the dog in extremely good shape bufore you try any training.

She'll probably fetch, but you might need a shock collar and a good book on how to use it to get some discipline in that undoubtedly thick arse skull.

Yeah that's along the lines I was thinking. I'll take it one step further and say for the time you'll spend on a 10 year old dog, get a puppy and train it. You'll have it for years to come.

If the answer to this question is no, I'd suggest you not get a puppy.
