Watching a couple of hunting shows the other day and they were only shooting mallard drakes . We pass on divers unless it is real slow , but we shoot hens . How about everybody else ?

I shoot the drakes first but if a hen is in range and I got a shell or two left I'm shooting

Hunting hasn't been good enough in a long time to be picky between drakes and hens.

If I had my druthers I'd shoot only drakes though.

Shooting drakes helps conservation. Shoot the drakes.

I've got an old photo around of 30 green wing drakes somewhere. It was a great hunt!

I have been on one hunt where we were picking out the drakes only. It was by far the best hunt I've been on at the lease. It happens just not that often anymore.

Over course you should only pick the drakes out. That should be 2nd nature when a group comes in, something you don't even have to think about. Shoot the green. Not saying we wont whack a Susie if one floats in and we feel it's going to be a slow hunt. But when it's on you don't. We have many a hunt where it's nothing but green, the way it should be.

I've only done that on Texas coast while hunting pintails and redheads.

If a group of mallards comes in do people really start just start shooting willy nilly, with no regard to what's a drake or hen? That's nuts. I was taught as a little shite to always pick out the drakes. Hell back then if you shot a hen it was game over anyway. You could shoot 9 drakes then a hen. But shoot a hen first it was over.

Most people aren't on hunts where there are enough ducks for it to matter. You shoot what you can when you can because limiting out isn't all that common. Granted, if a large group of mallards are cupped and committed 20 yards away, I think every hunter would shoot green first, but if you have a small flock passing by and the best shot is a suzie, I'm shooting suzie. They eat the same.

If it flies it dies, but we will pass on hens when it looks like it is gonna be one of those days.

Hard to pick out a blue wing teal or specklebelly drake. So I shoot any and all.

Zero fricks given on drakes only for ducks that aren't Mallards and Pintails. We really try to pass on Pintail hens.

If its brown its down bro. If the flight allows, sure I'll pick out the fatheads. But here lately, nothing gets a pass including sawbills.
