Saw two in 4 horse lake. I have fished there for 4 years and have never seen one.

Is the salinity up? Were they lost?

You mean porpoise right? I see them most of the time. Even in pretty shallow ponds.

Commonly incorrectly called porpoises. I grew up calling them porpoises...doesn’t mean it is correct.

Yeah. Not trying to call anyone out. Just making sure we weren't talking about mahi. Because if so I'm calling In sick to work to go fishing.

Glad to see that most of the responses here have it right, they are dolphins. Usually see them close in around Shell beach, Lena Lagoon like someone mentioned, around Lake Borgne, etc. and definitely fight them like a mofo down the MRGO in summer.

No porpoises in the Gulf of Mexico. Help spread the good word

I guess we will called them Bottle nosed dolphin. The ones down the MRGO are smart as hell. They will herd fish up against the rocks and just sit behind the boat waiting for you to throw the small ones.

I have been fishing/hunting in the Delacroix area for about 25 or so years. They are not real common, but you will see a few inland from time to time. Four Horse is not that far in from Black Bay.You can check the Crooked Bayou gauge to see the salinity in that area.

Among other locales, bottlenose dolphins inhabit the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, where they comprise about thirty percent of the total population of bottlenose dolphins in U.S. waters. (Often, bottlenose dolphins are referred to as porpoises, but there are no true porpoises residing in the Gulf of Mexico.)

Porpoises are cold water species. The water is too warm in the Gulf. The closest porpoise to us lives off the coast of New England, the harbor porpoise.

I heard you can catch them with live trout under a 4 horseman cork.

There’s a place In Leeville that we call dolphin cove. Always catch trout there, but sometimes the dolphin are thick. I’m talking 5 or 6 at a time. When you hook a trout you have to waterski it back to the boat, cause no Matter how far away they are coming full speed. There was one that had to be at least 10 ft rubbing up against the side of the boat last time we went and was actually letting us touch him.

Them suckers will spool you in a matter of seconds once they realize they are hooked.
