Have a 6 year old female lab that started being stingy with her food last week - ate once a day. This past Sunday she ate both meals normally (ate instantly morning and evening), but come Monday, she started a hunger strike.

Monday she threw something up she ate from the yard. I let her strike until Thursday. Went to the vet thinking she might have something else stuck in her stomach/throat. Bloodwork, x-ray, and some pancreatic (I think) test came back normal. Vet gave us some meds and Royal Canine low-fat canned food. Dog devoured it twice yesterday, but this morning she won't touch it.

She's had a version of pro-plan all her life. I don't know if she's taking a stand against her food or is sick. She's virtually herself. Not overly tired or sluggish.

Any other thoughts/suggestions? Active, trained hunting dog. Last heat cycle in August. Not preggers.

Did you feed her anything special before that? My old lab would go on a hunger strike every time I killed a deer and let him eat the trimmings. It'd take him 4 or 5 days to go back to eating dog food.

Grab some tuna or salmon. Sear it shred it. Put on top of food.

Do that for a few days. Just know they will have fishy farts but she’ll eat

Yeah, that was my initial thought, but it's been 2 weeks since she may have had anything out of the ordinary. Only thing that it could be was a bite or two of another dog's food. After that she went one week eating one meal a day. Before mid-day yesterday, she didn't eat (literally nothing) for 4 days.

My dog started doing this and vet attributed it to kidney issues.

Go get her tested pronto

I bet she'll eat when she gets hungry enough.

Is she pooping?

I'd think she may have some sort of blockage.

Do this. Our 13-year-old lab had the same symptoms. Turned out his spleen was ruptured. Sadly, had to put him down.

Buy a ribeye steak and cook it. Sit down and eat it and offer her half of it. If she eats it slap the shite out of her and tell her she’s back on the dog food!!!
I had a lab that would try that with me when I first got married my wife swore something was wrong with him but he just wanted table food.

Why in the hell do you feed your dog twice a day? As previously mentioned it will eat when it gets hungry. You've taken it to the vet and gotten it checked out. Just dump some food in a bowl and don't worry about it.

I actually am a knowledgeable dog owner. Especially of Labrador retrievers. We own and hunt several of them. These are hunting dogs, not fur babies. If your dog won't eat for an extended period of time you should take it to the vet. You did. It's fine. Quit feeding it so much. A lab doesn't need a meal twice a day.

Do you happen to remember what bloodwork and tests they did specifically?

I assume the x-ray was abdominal and showed now signs of GI physical abnomralities.

my next things i would be checking if this becomes a prolonged issue would be kidney parameters and looking at dental health.

she's at the age where both of those could be a factor. The teeth could look ok just at first glance but you never know what is going on under the gum line without further investigation and imaging. Has she had dental cleanings before?

Kidneys too in early to mid disease might not have very big signs. loss of appetite is a fairly common early one. Have you noticed any other changes lately, such as increased water intake or urination?

Well congratulations for being one of a billion lab owners.

Imagine thinking you’re better than someone bc you don’t take ten seconds to feed a dog in the morning.

I have a 1.5 year old black lab male who did this a couple of months ago. He'd eat the food out of the bowl before you could blink. One day I got him a bigger water bowl since it was hot outside and he was drinking more. After that he randomly wouldn't eat his food out of his normal bowl. Tried changing bowls and the same result. His mood was still normal and he would randomly eat some at different times of the day. Took him to the vet and everything came back normal. He will eat it out of my hand no problem and will eat treats and human food. He's just being stubborn. He's gotten better but it's 50/50 if he eats at one time or not.

thank you for the reply.

Test was just a bloodcount (?), not liver or kidney. Taking her back Monday to test for that.

Xray was of her body, vet showed me and pointed out things from throat to rear end and said everything looked clear.

She has never had her teeth cleaned. I did watch the vet check her mouth and gums... not to say there isn't something lurking.

Water intake is not abnormal, and she has always pissed on everything she smells...
