German Shepherd. I had 2 Aussies and this is the second closest in intelligence.

If you have that kind of property I’d recommend a GSP or Weimaraner

Rhodesian Ridgeback, Vizsla or Border Collie would be my choice in your situation. Especially with room to roam.

Got a mountain cur when I was a senior in college 10 years ago. He is gun shy, so he isn’t a hunter (I didn’t get him for that purpose anyway), but he is as loyal as can be.

Yep. They don’t mind heat, cold, drought, floods, are smarter than most dogs, keep snakes and coons off your porch, are athletic and low-maintenance. They don’t mind if you leave for a month at a time.

Wife and I got a Goldendoodle, yeah, I know, sounds gay. He's a cool dog and very smart for not even a year old. I've spent very litle time training him. He's got the basic commands down pat and has for a while. Will sit with a simple point at the ground, at 5 months old he did. Learned to ring a bell to go in and out young too. He's 11 months old now and is chilled out. Doesn't chew on things much being a puppy. Yeah, a few shoes and a hose pipe gun but no furniture. Excellent around kids.

The bad

He needs grooming

Get a breed bred to do whatever you want it to do. People ignore this too often.

Rat terrier. Great varmint dog. Good pet. Pretty smart. Ours let's us know where every snake/rat/turtle/possum/armadillo/etc./etc. is anywhere near our house. Kids love him and vice versa.

Highly recommend

Cane Corso

Cane Corso

Very good with children if that's a concern. A Boxer is would be a good choice also as others have noted.

Really depends on what you want out of the dog. Something outdoor and athletic or something indoor and just lap companion. My personal choice for my next dog will be a doberman.

Just stay away from these
dalmatian
chow
German shep

I have a cattle dog and a Cane Corso. This is my first cattle dog and my second Corso. I agree that Corsos are great dogs.

My Corso was just a puppy in the picture

Loyal, playful, kid-friendly. Medium shedder. Gotta keep them fenced in. They get out they will follow their noses and never look back.

I have 3 and I love them to death.

We have had rescues, but also German Shorthaired Pointers. Will always have one. Great with children. Quick learners, but need to be crated when young. High energy and can get destructive. But get past that stage, and you can't ask for a more versatile, loyal pet. Good watch dogs - but none for not being a biter.
