I think that all the cowboys that keep one in the chamber are more scared of invasion than I am.
Fear must be hell.
How do you sleep at night?
Get a grip.
Or move to a better neighborhood.

I too started my gun safety training around age 5.
It was with a Daisy like most folks.
My dad always made me treat it like any other gun.
Always treat it like it is loaded and chambered.
Always keep the safety on until ready to fire.
Always keep your finger off of the trigger until ready to fire.
Always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction.
Be sure of your target and what is behind it before you fire.
I also was trained in gun safety by a Great Uncle who had been shot twice. Once in Korea and once accidentally, while hunting. To say he was a hard arse when it came to gun safety would be putting it lightly.
My dad was also very peculiar about gun safety. He experienced a ND while in the lineup during basic training. The numbskull next to him discharged his M14 and my dad said he could feel the round when it whizzed right by his head.
Neither of these guys take gun safety lightly, but I guarantee you, both of them have a weapon within arms reach and both of them have one in the chamber. They understand gun safety and have been on the wrong end of a bullet, but they also understand that an unloaded weapon is useless.

What about your three year old coming to get in bed with Pops?

Just fine, no preparation needed for me

Like I said, I didn't read the entire thread so I'm not sure...
Are we talking about being locked and loaded while carrying or in home defense guns?
I chamber while carrying but none of my guns in the house are loaded.

My weapons are loaded.
Just not chambered.
Big difference.

Depends where you are. Some places, I would have a loaded gun in my home. There ain't many things in this world that apply to everyone though.

So, some risks would make you choose to be less prepared, interesting.

I taught my kids to treat each and every gun as if its loaded and ready to go.
