I had this exact conversation with myself in front of the $12 axes at HF yesterday. I do have a grinder as well.

Husqvarna and Estwing, Both mid length camp axes, prefer the wooden grip on the Husq. Very pleased with both.

I use a splitting maul for splitting wood

When I used to split wood by hand (I quit at 45), I used to use a 10 lbs sledge hammer and a diamond wedge.

Easier to go full bore on than a maul imo.

If I can avoid using a maul to split then I will. Unfortunately some nasty wood demands the brunt force of one. But give me some fresh cut clear oak rounds and my light splitting axe and I'm a happy camper.

Try a diamond wedge. A normal wedge hits gnarly shite and wants to pop out. A diamond wedge can handle some crazy stuff.

Get it started with a 2-3 lb hammer then wail away with a 10 lb sledge.

tbh, If the wood is so bad that I have to use wedges, i'm rolling that shite off into a hole. Too many free downed trees in my area to waste time on wood that isn't fun to split.

I hear that. I just have an obsession that if I cut down a hardwood on my land, I'm using that sucker.

Using an axe is an art. Glad to see you baws carrying on the culture.

I have a double bit (not sure of the brand) and two Fiskars splitters.

Nothing like making quick work of a good water oak for firewood on a cool evening to get the blood pumping.

Exactly!

Use an old double bit axe that my sons will be the 5th generation to own one day.

That's taking the nostalgia a little too far.

If I cut down a tree with pawpaws axe while I had a perfectly fine running chainsaw sitting in the barn, he'd call me a dumbass.

I’m always amazed at the depth of intense knowledge this board offers. I would have never believed there would be a group this size of people who were passionate about axes.

I have an ax, a splitting maul, and something between a hatchet and an ax with a plastic handle. I found all of them on the side of the road.

Call me when you split wood with your chainsaw, because I want to watch that shite.

Sorry if my message was confusing. Use an old heirloom axe to split wood and rich lighter. Firm believer in a Stihl ms360 for all the rest.
