Assuming one had the proper tools and work area how hard do you think something like above would be? Obviously it would take quite a long time to make sure it was done right.

I've been reading a lot of forums and apparently diy skiffs and boats are semi popular along the coast.

Anyone have any experience going this route?

Would be great if you had the skill set to do it all properly. My concern would be getting 5 miles out in a homemade boat.

Lockport has the Center for Traditional Boat Building that teaches classes.

Also, Lake Ponchartrain Basin Maritime Museum in Madisonville teaches classes

I would love to do a skiff or something small. although I have zero of the necessary tools or skills.

I would never even try something larger that I would take more than a mile or so from shore.

That website has some pretty good looking plans also check out Glenn L as they have a shite ton of designs for purchase as well.

Hopefully in the not to distant future i will be able to dabble in building pleasure boats. I have been designing work boats for the last 10 years and it would be nice to do something in the recreational side of things.

This post reminds me of a previous thread that I monitored but did not join in on.........

Someone on here has built a homemade pirogue (?) and helped several others do so...

My great uncle used to build boats and made the best homemade whiskey. He went through brain surgery and came out with retrograde amnesia only remembering his wife and daughter. Now he has a shed full of tools he doesn't know how to use, two unfinished boats and a few stills. Apparently it was a hundred year old family recipe passed down by word, he was the only one who had it. :(

I made their 14' canoe from the free plans. It is basically a pirogue. It was a fun little project for my son and II that was going to be a practice project to see if we wanted to build a skiff. We enjoyed the pirogue, but realized that a fully rigged boat takes a lot more skill.

A few months later I bought a small skiff.

As others have said, I would not want to be in a choppy bay in a homemade boat.

If I had a big enough shop And big enough Wallet I would LOVE to build myself a 36' center console.

Inboard motor...... That thing is beautiful, but not nearly practical enough for me. I need a clorox bottle that floats...

I've been wanting to do one of those in aluminum for a while. I've worked on fiberglass hulls and transoms before. I don't think I'd want to make one of those, not that there's anything wrong with them. I'd just trust my welding over wood and fiberglass joinery any day.

I built a 8fter in highschool with a jet drive. THis took alot of work and it only consisted of 2 sheets of plywood.

OP, that boat you had on that link, I would say an easy 1000 hours even though the plans say 600-800 hours. So, you looking at 1 1/2-2 years unless you don't work.
