Maybe they feel like 6.5 is just another solution in search of a problem.

if you forget your ammo is the caliber you selected going to be available at most any country store?

This gets stated too much IMO. If you forget your ammo, you shouldn't be hunting.

If you plan on forgetting ammo, you better use the cheap stuff. That’ll be the only brand you can find everywhere.

Not to mention, if it isn't the ammo you sighted your gun in with you would need to sight it in with the new ammo.

Or at least you should if you want to be an ethical hunter.

ETA: I'm 48 and have hunted all of my life. I have never gone without ammo.

I know it's possible to over look but it's not something I've ever done.

I haven't forgotten ammo per-sey but I have totally grabbed the wrong box of ammo before. Was supposed to grab the 308 and grabbed a box of 30-06 instead.

I have never once forgotten my ammo but I have seen it happen enough over my lifetime to know that it’s not an uncommon occurrence. And while I make a point to keep spare in my truck as well as my camper, I’m not so arrogant to think that it couldn’t happen to me one day.

he rented was a 308. Said it dropped everything he shot.

Dropping an animal is all about shot placement. Nothing to do with caliber. Nearly any high velocity round can drop a grizzly or moose if the shot is placed perfectly.

While shot placement can not be overempasized, using an appropriate caliber and bullet is also important. Even if the shot is perfectly placed on a quartering away big game animal (especially a big or tough one) at close range, if the bullet is to fragile or the caliber not adequate to penetrate through the abdomen/flank to reach the offside lungs, the animal will probably not go down quickly.

There is only one way to drop or anchor an animal every time and that is only by hitting something structural.

You have to hit it in the spine or take out a shoulder/shoulders

Explain why? Any high velocity rifle from 22lr to the 50cal can take down anything in North America. To drop an animal all it takes is shot placement. A nail gun can probably drop an animal if you are close enough to it.

I know that, I wanted him to explain why caliber matters if I can drop a deer with a 223 all the way 338 Lapua doing what you just posted.

I'm not explaining why the caliber is part of this equation

It's because you can't. Deer have been taken with 22lr, 223,
243, all the way up to 338 and 50cal muzzle loaders. None do a better job unless we talking distance. Out to 100yds 223 on up can drop a deer in its tracks. Probably even out to 300yds.

Another vote for the 25/06. Many years ago, an old Texas hunting guide told me that he had witnessed the demise of hundreds of whitetails with numerous calibers. He went on to state that in his experience, he thought the 25/06 was the perfect whitetail caliber. I grew up shooting the 30/06, so I thought I would just prove him wrong. I bought a 25/06 Encore pistol, and learned how effective the 25/06 really is. With the trio of the 25/06, 30/06 and 35 Whelen, you are set for anything in North America.

Sawfish, with the .30-06, you’re ready for anything in North America. In fact, a man killed all the North American big game animals with an ‘06 and wrote a book about it.
