To what? Dead is dead. OP needs a 308. Not a Hornady special.

My last rifle build was a 6.5 PRC that I intend to use when I do hunt deer (which is all likely 250 yds and in). But I also enjoy reloading and shooting long distance. 6.5 PRC seems to have the power and ballistics to cover both of those things.

If I was truly just getting a gun to just hunt deer, I'd probably get something like a Bergara in .308.

A tikka T3 with a trijicon accupoint 3-9 mil dot if you aren't going to shoot far (~500 yards and in) or trijicon tenmile / nightforce / swfa if you are going to shoot far. That's going to be my answer for everything except varmints or fighting a war. It's going to be dead nuts reliable and accurate right out of the box and there's really no practical reason to buy anything else unless you need to burn some money.

Caliber dependent on what you plan to do. 6.5 creedmoor, .30-06 or .300 win mag. Same thing, that's going to be the answer for everything except varmints or fighting a war. Any of those will work for anything in north america and the decision depends on how far you want to shoot, how well you can shoot and how well you handle recoil.

I think a T3 in .300 win mag is the best do anything in north america rifle you can get regardless of price. There's no reason to put up with the recoil and ammo cost if you aren't ever going to shoot an elk across a canyon though. Shooting that rifle well requires some dedication to the range. For damn near everybody in the southeast, 6.5 creedmoor is a better choice and lots of serious elk hunters would argue that's a better choice for elk than a .300 as well. Some places have caliber restrictions, especially guided hunts, and a .300 win mag will have you covered for all of those in case you ever end up on a guided grizzer bear hunt or something of that nature.

There in lies the rub. A 6lb T3X in a big magnum cartridge will knock your teeth out. You can nut up and deal with it shooting at a bull but it’s like buying a 3/4 ton to pull a camper once a year, gimme a 308 or 270 to stack nannies at the camp. I’m also putting stupid shite on an elk rifle, heavy arse scope and arca everything.

It's not THAT bad. The whole getup will be 7.5+ lbs with the scope. But, a 6.5 cripplemore is generally going to be a better choice. A t3x with a lightweight suppressor is :chefskiss:

The necessity of a big boomer is debatable for most people but I do think that if you're going to own one, you need to use it for everything. You're going to use it for the most expensive (both time and money) single hunt you make, so you need to be good with it. Shooting stuff with zero recoil all the time and occasionally transitioning to a cannon is a tough change to make for me. If you aren't comfortable with the recoil shooting skillet head swamp donkies then you probably shouldn't be using it for the most important shot you'll ever take.

Spend 1500 on an AR (hunting caliber rounds) and the rest on ammo and scope.

Just a question for you, would you pick a .243 over a .260?

Why do you think the 6 CM is superior to the 6.5 CM?

I personally like the 6mm due to less recoil and flatter shooting than the 6.5 CM. I think it’s like 15” difference at 500 yds

I prefer the 6.5PRC over both of them though.

Not sure on 243 vs 260, I do know I’ve seen a pile of deer killed with the .243 though. I’ve never used either personally

Reason I asked is because the .243 win and the 6 cm are basically the same as are the .260 rem and the 6.5 cm.

the 6.5 prc is definitely a better cartridge for hunting than the 6.5cm as it produces around 300 fps more speed.

I will say that I have a couple of 6.5cm that I've been able to push to 6.5 prc factory loading speeds (2900fps with 140gr Berger) with loading them myself. That being said, I could most assuredly get the same or better results from the 6.5 prc as well.

Oh, the 6.5 prc is the ballistic equivalent of the 6.5-284. The 6.5-284 norma.
If I'm not mistaken (and I may be) the norma either didn't have or doesn't have a saami spec. The 6.5prc is basically taking the norma and creating a new cartridge and getting a saami spec.

Good info, I really like the PRC. It's been fun to shoot.

6.5x55 is the best 6.5 but unfortunately the factory ammo options for it largely suck.

Our problem in america is everything has to have a .30-06 or .375 bolt face and either be a .308 or .30-06 length action. We've FINALLY just now got to the point of having a catalog of stuff that's optimized to those constraints.

Browning AB3 Micro Stalker 7X08 with 140g. Double tap ammo and Swarovski Z8i 3,5-28x50

My grouping improved because of low recoil.

I think that's been one reason that the 6.5 grendel and 6.8 spc have been so slow to be adopted is because of the AK bolt face on the grendel and not sure which is on the SPC.

Which is a shame. I absolutely love my 6.5 Grendel build. I’ve been on the deer and hogs with it for the past couple years with great results. And pretty much zero recoil to boot. 250 yds and in, it’s a nasty round using Barnes bullets

My buddies 5 year old son rolled a doe on youth weekend with it.

I guess I'm a bit old school, or maybe just old. I have always used a Marlin 336 .30-30 with a Leupold 2x7. At the ranges I hunt, it has served me well.

Lightweight and accurate.

ETA: And for me, there's just something cool about hunting with a lever-action; it feels like a throwback to a much simpler time.
