Buy a good used Ruger No. 1 in 270. A single shot is how you should learn that it only takes one, when you choose your shot, aim small, and relax through the pull. Put your money into the optics.

Back-up rounds just teach you that you don't need to be precise on the first shot. You do, and one is all it takes.

Man, that's a horrible choice. A CVA Scout 2 is cheaper and IMO a better rifle.

good choice, unless you don't care for a gun that looks like something out of a John Wick movie.

In my heart I want to refute your claim, but in my mind I know I cannot.

Still, one day I will own one.

Yea, not even in the stratosphere of coolness as a No 1. The CVA and handi-rifle are both better hunting rifles IMO. Both are much cheaper, and the CVA is almost certainly going to be more accurate. I've shot a half dozen different scout 2's and they've all been way more accurate than a $250 crack barrel rifle should be. Fantastic trigger as well. Just avoid the bull barrel versions, they carry like arse. They're so barrel heavy that you have to carry them muzzle down on a sling.

Cabelas has steyr scouts on sale for like $1200. That's a hell of a good deal on a hell of a good rifle. Looks goofy, but it's a really well thought out rifle.

With the budget you named, this ought to be on the short list.

35 whelan with a good scope.

Easy for beginner to use and you can hunt the Primative and Modern season with same gun. Ammo easy and just all around good gun.

All the deer I've shot with mine within 125 yards never ran. My "big" rifle I've had to track, a few not far, but it's nice to pull the trigger and see them fall in there tracks.

They must have overproduced the hell out of that model. Europtics has had that sale for a couple of months at least and that's a screaming deal for that scope.

Tikka or Bergara in 308 ..both quality, accurate rifles with smooth bolts..either one will last you a life time …308 because you can find ammo anywhere and it usually has the most variety available

You can find 308 Norma soft point on the internet for $22 a box, some times less and my Bergara shoots half inch groups with it

Meopta has the best glass for the money..you can get a 2-10x42 Optika5 for less than $400

Don't go crazy on your first rifle, get into as economically as possible. Folks will tell you to buy a scope that costs more than the rifle, don't do that. Start at your local pawn shops. Find a rifle that fits you that looks barely used. If it has a scope, it will be 50/50 whether the scope is good, so consider the scope lagniappe. If you do have to ditch the scope, buy a reasonably priced replacement from Academy.

You're not snipping the Taliban at 1000 yards, you shooting one of the dumbest animals on the plant at 100 yards. Whatever rifle you buy will hold its value, so if you get the hunting bug, you can sell that rifle and easily upgrade. Whatever you buy make sure there is plenty of ammo for it, walk through Academy and see what they have a lot of on the shelves, .308, 30.06, .270, .243 and many others will be plentiful.

I’m glad I read the entire thread before having to post almost exactly this, I was gonna say find a savage combo deal before you invest a $1K into a gun, and might find out it’s boring and you’d rather spend your time fishing, but a pawn shop is a better thought than a new entry combo.

.308/.30-06 or .270
(The most important part WAY MORE IMPORTANT than what brand your scope is) Nosler Partition or Barnes TSX bullets
