I like the build threads that pop up here, so I’ll do my part and contribute. Building a 24x14 deck, I figured it would take me 2 weekends to complete. Well, frick digging post holes! I’ve gotten soft since I’ve gone to a desk job, and/or maybe digging post holes just sucks. Well, that got dug and the posts are concreted in. Hoping to get most of it framed/braced up today, and get some of the decking laid out so we can use the back door. The steps pictured will get moved to the front once the deck, and new steps get built.

Should be a big quality of life improvement. Excited to see it complete.

Saturday

I must have measured something wrong on my posts. Could have easily got away with 14ft 4x4s. They are sunk a little over 2ft.

———————————————

Sunday - Morning

Yeah this gonna be a full 2 weekend project.

Sunday - Evening

Made the bold statement I was gonna get the deck boards done today. However, my productivity slipped a bit with it warming up and me trying to find where I set my damn beer down at. Hopefully I’ll get it finished up during the week. Really wanna tackle the roof next weekend and have it done except for the sealing/accessorizing.

Sunday Weekend #2

Rain and work schedule has expanded the time frame on this project. Maybe a 3 weekend project

The bracing has been done, and it is now extremely sturdy. No bounce. Deck boards are cut, should be done decking it by today (Monday). The roof will be quite the project. Will probably just toss a tarp over part of it so I can get this woman off my neck.

———————————————
Saturday (before Mother’s Day)

Worked from sun up to sun down. I wanted to finish the project for Mother’s Day, but it just wasn’t going to happen. My ole man is pretty awesome. We busted arse all day Saturday to get the porch roofed enough for us to use the next day. I owe him big time for all the work he’s helped me with. Might paint part of his fence he hasn’t finished during one of my mid week off days.

5 of 9 sheets of tin laid, so I should be able to get the rest one evening. Railing and new steps are projects I can handle solo.

You're going to need more steps to get to the top of that deck.

Keep the bushes trimmed. It will make your deck look bigger.

Some flashing secured to the deck tin roof, tucked under something from the trailer. Gonna figure that one out later

Finishing up an 8'x16' now. This is how I did it.

Tin roof, then used a roll of 10" flashing slid under the shingles and secures to the tin roof.

What kind of pitch did you use on your porch? Same as house? Trying to picture how high roof line would be at edge of porch and how high you would have to go to tie into existing roof. Just curious because the first house I lived in they added a porch and dropped the pitch to about 2” per foot. I had a lot of trees around and they would not shed off that roof. Pain in the arse to have to rake the roof.

Are those 2 by 8's for your joists? If so, I would add 2 more posts on each end to support it and I would also be sure to stack your wood up correctly at the end of each work day so you have less warping. Also, if you are using a framing gun and shooting 3" nails on your framing, don't be afraid to put in more nails that you think you need because nails are cheep. I would also put decking screws on the bullnose deck boards because they want to warp as the wood dries out. Good luck.

Yep 2x8s, I was gonna come back and run a line of posts down the middle when I was done. So, 4 more posts supporting the middle. Get a jack, lift it up a smidge and set those short posts on concrete footings.

Screw gun, using (3) 3 inch screws for the joints. 2 1/2 inch deck screws, 2 screws at the end of the deck boards, 1 screw alternating every 2 foot.

Good advice. However, maybe it’ll straighten on some of the warp I already got lol. Some of these deck boards are wonk.

90% of lumber purchased from Lowe’s.

Thanks, she’s enjoying the project. Overseeing from wherever the shade gathers.

The 4x4s are run up for the roof. They are too long, gonna cut the tops off when we work on the roof.

Those 2 board running across the deck about waist height, are my safety rails for the time being. Didn’t want the wife to step off the deck when she opened the door.

make sure you drive a screw to gap the deck boards as you lay them down.

The deck boards I got were super green, so from what I read they would shrink a decent bit. I wanted the deck to be pretty tight 1/8-1/4 inch gaps. So I’ve got them almost butted up to each other. I did leave a gap, but it’s like 1/32. My old man and my uncle have decks. They used a screwdriver to gap the boards. The gap is too much for what I wanted.

My gapping tool

Some boards got a little creak in them, should go away within a few weeks.

Progress bump.

Note- I’ve already seen the deck boards shrink on the ones I laid last weekend. Curious how much gap will exist when it’s done.

Almost a 1/4 inch. I never leave a gap, it does it when it shrinks.
