I've been looking at getting back into rifle shooting after not doing it for a long while. I'm right handed, but left-eye dominant. I'm hesitant to try firing from my left side since I don't feel like I physically handle rifles or shotguns as well. That frustration got me to stop shooting anything besides pistols. However I'm looking to buy a Henry 22lr so I'd rather use my right hand to cock it smoothly.

I've scoured online to find what method(s) work best to compensate for this. There's conflicting information I'm finding about keeping one eye shut or both open. Or using an optical sight instead of an iron one. I know I will have to get a lot of practice in to find the best method for me, but I was wondering if anyone has had the same issue. Any advice or experience would be greatly appreciated.

Very Right Handed, and Very Left Eye Dominant

I shoot everything left handed to put my left eye over the sights/scope. It is impossible to shoot RH and keep both eyes open as my left eye takes over 100% of the time.
I do shoot pistols right handed but can aim over my left eye.
I even have a left handed bow, which means I can't draw as much weight, but can shoot well enough.
I work the bolts right handed in between shots pulling my RH off the stock to the bolt. Not ideal, but then again I am not at war.

I do, but I always just close my left eye. As for as hunting, I don't mind shooting right or left handed. To me it is whichever one takes the less amount of movement.

I think both eyes open comes more into play with shotguns.

I learned to shoot left handed when I learned to shoot as a kid. You have to make habitual because it goes against everything else your hands and arms do

I close my left eye. Playing pool sucks too.

I keep both eyes open. With a scope, if helps me get the target into the scope quicker by finding it with my open right eye and zeroing it in with my scoped left eye.

Same here, but I treated myself to a Tikka left hand .270 a couple of years ago, and love it. You just need to practice working the bolt, and it is no big deal.

My son is the same. From a bench he shoots LH but holding the rifle he crosses over and uses his left eye right handed. I don't know how he does it but it works ok.

I had address this a young teenage wanting to shoot a bow. I practiced with a patch over my dominate (left eye) to train my right eye to take over. Once i got it trained it improved shooting both a rifle and a shotgun.

Ben McDonald does this when bow hunting

My Dad, me and my son are all RH but left eye dominant. We all shoot left handed. You can train yourself with a patch over your left eye. I tried it years ago but it was easier just to shoot LH.

I also learned to shoot left handed as a kid, even archery. It's very natural for me now, but I realized this early on and started young.

I'm right handed/left eye dominant and can't shoot a darn thing from my right shoulder. All of my guns, though, are right handed models and I shoot them with no problem. Bolt actions are a bit awkward, but I manage.

I'm cross-dominant too. There are varying degrees of it, some being mildly so and while others have big issues. I do use my right non-dominant eye. I partially close my left eye but leave it open just enough so that some light gets through. Perhaps give it a try. I've also read about people obscuring the dominant lens on shooting glasses so that both eyes are open but the dominant one can't take over (my squinting technique is likely a similar compensation).

My oldest is right handed but left eye dominant. He shoots bow and gun right handed for now.

As here, most people I talk to says to get him started shooting left handed.
