Older Louisiana guy here who’s always worn caps. Now I want a western/cowboy hat but would like some user input. I would be wearing it occasionally in both semi-professional workplace and going out in general public but not during physical sweaty activities. Willing to spend up to a couple of hundred bucks or so. I’m an outdoor guy, not flashy. Don’t know the brands, styles, preferred colors, etiquette, etc so I would prefer some actual user input versus random google search results. Thanks in advance.

Go to a Cavender's. They have felt and straw hats that are decent quality in their in house brand and you wont have to spend $300 your first go around. They can steam or form the brim the way you want and you can figure out what you really want before going all in on a good one.

I typically wear straw/palm when it's warm and felt in cooler months or formal.

There's some nice custom hat makers in Texas or Oklahoma but Cavenders will be good for first one

Boot Barn keeps Stetson in stock. Mostly 4X or so, so it's their lower quality line, but you can order one as nice as you want.

I have this one that I like...

STETSON MEN'S 4X BUFFALO FELT SILVER MINE COWBOY HAT

$150

I got away from straw hats and where trucker caps in the summer. In the winter/cooler months a nice felt hat is sweet, if that's your style.

Link to all Stetson hats they offer...

65 degrees or less, I'm wearing one of these. Stetson, crushable, wool, from Cavender's. I have several of them. Keeps mist/light rain off my glasses, sun off my eyes, keeps my bald head warm.

Hotter than 65...palm hat not straw. I've worn Stetson and a brand called Tula. They've got different styles.

Up to this point all my brimmed hats are Tilley’s, which are great hats but better for the heat.

To pile on here - somebody recommend a full brim fishing/beach hat for me where the brim doesn't flop around in the wind.

Everyday Carry Hat

This is my everyday carry hat i've been running. Its nice because I can dress it up with a sports coat and boots, but also dress down with flops. Highly recommend.

A tip on hat etiquette —

- Felt can be worn year round
- Straw can be worn from May to Labor Day.

My dad was a Texas Ranger and this was something he followed that was passed down and instilled it in me from when I was a young baw so i still follow these rules.

I doubt many care, but I have seen people call others out on this in public before at rodeo/bars, etc….I only do it because I like following old(er) fashion rules as well as not giving him something to bitch about when we see each other

In regards to where I get mine, I only do custom hats from Standard Hat Works in Waco. Excellent quality, but def would recommend a hat off of the shelf for a newbie until you figure out what you like.

While a good general rule to go by, if its warm enough im wearing a straw.

For the OP. American Hat Co makes great hats. Both my straw and felt hats are American. Id suggest 5" brim and a cattleman crown. Not sure where you are located but go to a store than can shape the brim for you. The styles have really flattened out in recent years but I stick to my 90s style I grew up with and it fits my facial structure better.

If youre looking for a cheap option for everyday outdoor work use cant go wrong with a Bangora. They get great circulation on top of your head.

I never liked palm leaf hats. They are heavy and hot to me. I know guys that wear felts all year and some are pretty good cowboys but just not my cup of tea.

First trip to the mountains when I was 12 or 13 years old we stayed in Steamboat Springs, Colorado one night. I snuck away from the motel and went to the western wear store where I bought myself a 4X Stetson for about $36. Mom was furious but dad told her that it was my money so I could spend it as I wanted. Seventy four years later, I still have the hat and the original box but, like the rest of my body, my head has swelled a bit over the years so I don't wear it anymore.

I feel like this, seersucker, linen, etc. has kind of evolved into Easter thru Columbus Day in the Deep South.

That is kind of stretching it on the front end though. Nothing like showing up to church with an early April Easter cold front pushing through, but there’s still some dipshit that showed up wearing a seersucker suit.

Redhead

Cabelas or bass pro have them for sure

Been enjoying mine for a few years now. Stiff, with a wire that runs around the brim. Holds shape even while wet.
