Whats top manageable speed for something like that with outboards vs diesels?

Each one of those lower units is like a sea anchor on the back, too. An inboard would produce a lot less drag on the water.

I plan to start small and build my way up. Thinking a good place to start is a 26 regulator or 25/28 contender and repower and repudiate electronics and wiring.

Figure if I find the right hull I could maybe buy boat and run with motors as is and work in wiring and electronics while I save up for repower.

Yup. Only issue is that even a 2005 ish contender still sells for 120k in good condition (31 open does atleast)

Yeaah that’s about right for a 31.

But that’s too much boat for me. A 25/28 or 26 reg is still towable with a good triaxle and half ton.

Plus I’m not looking for in good condition. I’m looking for good bones in the 50-60 range. That I can revamp and bring back to life. Any boat that’s already been repowered is likely not something I’m interested in.

I don’t really understand the six motors but I totally understand the center consoles. The new setups are running 80 mph. You can have something that is low maintenance compared to a sportfish and run back to your camp at 50 mph and sleep on solid ground.

I would also throw hydrasport in the mix since it’s probably easier to find a good 28 in that price range

I feel like a center console is a little more fishable as well (except maybe billfish)

Honestly if you want a good starter boat for cheap get a 26 glacier bay. They are slow as shite but a tank

The only Center Console I’d think about taking over a sporty right now is a Freeman. In my book, it’s really hard to beat the comfort of a Sporty. There’s nothing better on a 95 degree July day than a nice nap in a bed in the A/C

I'm not disagreeing with that at all. I'm just saying it's easier to work a fish in a center console IMO

The upkeep on a sporty is astoundingly expensive. You either have to have crazy wealth or be able to write off the use in some way.

The advantage of the fast CCs is, as stated, you get there fast and you get home fast. Some, like the Regulator 41, Yellowfin 42, Nortech 392, Contender 39FA, etc have air conditioned berths that give a break from the heat.

For 95% of boaters into the offshore game, the high-end CC is the way to go.

I’m not knocking sporties, but I would not personally have one.

Nah, no way. Not with a competent captain. Having an open Stern with no motors is the tits. Bottom fishing, trolling, whatever. Now maybe for something like kite fishing for sails, but that's very very specific and I'd still take an open stern.

The water gets deep fast in So Flo. You can also shoot over to the Bahamas they are only like 50 miles away. So even a top of the line diesel set up you are talking 30 mph, when you can get 50-60+ mph and get places twice as fast that's where this is coming from. Hitting the oil rigs out of Louisiana. Now, there are plenty of places where a sportfisher is still king but these big fast boats can make sense.
