This is so incredibly true. People say oh diesels run forever. A lugger diesel in a low rpm application is an incredible machine. Twin diesels in a sporty is a diff animal. The amazing amount of upkeep and rebuilds required, as well as the crew needed to handle the vessel is a bigger investment than the boat. Very similar to why there are no inboard mud boats left, they make no sense when compared to a throw away lawn mower engine that will run forever with just pump gas.

Not really for boats in these price ranges. I don't know about that Scout, but most of these say $600k centerconsoles a sportfisher in that price range is not that expensive really.

You can get an older 34-45ft like Viking, Topaz, Bertram, etc. with some of the better diesels and your maintenance is really not that bad.

Now sure, a brand new $2 mil viking or whatever the maintenance is a lot. But they have so much creature comforts is crazy.

Another thing too, is we are talking $500-$1m on these top of the line center consoles. Probably a little more now. But a top of the line sportfisher now is multiples of that.

ETC: I'm not an accountant, but I think at one time guys were able to consider Sportfishers with bedrooms as 2nd or 3rd homes? I don't think that's really the case anymore. Which allowed you to expense a lot more things. I think most if not all of that has been taken away.

Waypointtv posted a video of a 39 ST running side by side with a 36’ YF, both with 3x350s. I know speed doesn’t tell the whole story, but it’s an interesting comparison.
ETA: both boats had USP tunes on them

I don’t know what to make of all the new monohulls coming out. Freeman has proven that you don’t have to sacrifice speed in a cat. Invincible seems to be the only other manufacturer trying to complete in the big cat space. I’ve never been on a Freeman, but supposedly they are the tits. I’ve been on a 36’ Twin Vee which may be like comparing a Camaro to a Ferrari, but I don’t like the feeling of being stuck between push/pull of the two hulls. Can other manufacturers not figure out the planing cat secret sauce?

As far as the multiple outboard. 3 was awesome. 4 was even better. But 5 and now 6 just looks kind of novel.

hopefully it comes with a legit rain suit, it blows my mind how they are so popular considering how wet they ride

I would say Prowler is definitely in competition with Freeman. They've been in the cat game for a long time.

I know you are mainly trolling, because you've been in what like 2 different model contenders? The last one being a 36 open?

I'll give you that they earned that reputation with the early 2000's 31 open, etc.

But the newer hulls are pretty solid

Yes Prowler has been. World Cat too. I just think of boats popular through the years in Venice. Contenders>Glacier Bay>Twin Vee and now Freeman. Prowlers and World Cat have always been there as an option, just never the preferred option.

They make tons of sense. IMO the only place a true sportfisher excels is very long range multi day trips and comfort. If you're using it for a day trip or even a 2 day trip and the goal is catching fish, you cant beat a big fast center console. It's cheaper, it can be trailered, it's faster, it simpler to operate, the list goes on and on.

Fishing on a sportfisher is just infinitely cooler though. A guy in a 42 freeman is still going to look at a passing 65 viking and go "damn, must be nice"

Safe to say neither one of them needs any tournament winnings

I love being on a sportfisher and passing the guys who are clearly in awe by it.

I have some pretty real world numbers on a 65 Viking. So it was 2008 65 enclosed bridge with twin cats bought in 2012 for 2.1ish. The boats has a full time captain and deckhand. Captain makes about 100 deckhand in the 60s plus the owner tips him on top of his salary. However both captain and deckhand are responsible for maintaining deer camp while the boat is on the hill during the winter so their salary cost can’t be directly tied to the boat.

When the bot was bought it immediately started booze cruising and fishing in destin. No major work was done. When it went into the yard every year routine maintencace was done.

Last year in the yard the boat was painted top to bottom 160k and teak redone 40k. As well as 3 seakeeper retrofits for about 200k.

On our first fishing trip after getting off the hill we slung a blade so 40k later we had two beautiful new Veems and two badass decorative pieces.

This year mezzanine air was retrofitted and some electronics were upgraded as the navnet system is becoming a dinosaur. Also they went into a rebuild on the cats as it is the last year on the warranties for the motor so anything found during the rebuild is covered by warranty. Once rebuild is done a 5 year 5000 hour warranty will be purchased on the cats.

All of this work is A) done to keep the boat updated B) to keep resale value high.

Granted once the boat comes off the hill with motors warrantied to 2024, seakeeper, new teak, new paint, and partial electronics upgrade the boat would sell for about what he paid for it originally.

Taking that into account it cost about 100k a year when you average all of the maintenxace and upgrades done to the boat not including slip rentals captain and deckhand salary fuel ups (boat ran about 130gph at 30knts).

These are somewhat rough numbers but they are fairly accurate. I worked on the boat for free for a few months for the experience before I started my real job and honestly I would be damn happy as a deckhand washing that boat every Monday.

Just talked to the captain and he’s got his eyes on an 82 Viking that he’s wanting to show the owner for about 5-6mil

I know if you own a sport money isn't exactly your biggest concern... but

It always blew my mind how much our snapper fishing trips cost in fuel when all we did was run maybe 30-40 miles and turn around. But marina diesel with a captains card isn’t near as bad as non-eth marina gas.

Generaly we paid about what you would pay for diesel at a land gas station.

CP3. Whenever my buddy gets his goat situation squared away and sells his Everglades and buys his next boat we will move our operation from destin to Venice.

We should hook up and atleast buddy boat a few times.
