They are wonderful dogs. Very docile with their family. They do indeed shed a ton and also drool like crazy. Hip dysplasia can be a big issue. That is what ultimately led us to having to put ours down, she got to the point she literally couldn't get up anymore

Personally I couldn't see bringing them indoors and making them house pets, just doesn't seem like what they are made for but to each their own I guess.
I can only speak to a sample size of one, but my sister's was a working dog all 5 years of his life; I don't think she ever set foot inside a house. Owner died, kids didn't want the land or the dog, ended up in a rescue, the dog LOVES being a house pet. Still raises hell with pelicans but that's about the "work" she's interested in.

Dad's neighbor at the lake had one. When we were there with all the kids, the dog would come sit in the yard and watch them. If anything or anyone started approaching, he'd get up and make it known that they weren't to come any closer. It was amazing to watch.

They seem to have a significant issue with wandering if they are kept outside and aren't working dogs. My brother lived in the country and had a pair of them, and they'd wander crazy distances (like 10 miles or more). They're an absolute pleasure as far as temperament, though.
I don't think the wandering thing was just his either, because I see a ton of them on local lost/found/spotted dog facebook groups.

I have a pyr mix, mom was registered pyr dad was a mostly Dane mix. One of the most docile family friendly dogs on earth. Until they feel the need to guard. Then she becomes a scary animal with a quickness.
I would get another just like her in a heartbeat.

I love pyres. Can't fight worth a damn. Good dogs though.
Mine always ended up same sex dog aggressive right around 2 years.

My dad had one at one time for his small farm to protect his chickens which were free ranging most of the time. Each time my brother would come over with his little boy, who was about 2-3 years old, the dog would follow my nephew around and when he’d wander too far off into the yard, the dog would take his arm (his whole arm) gently into its mouth and guide him back to us. It was amazing to watch and my nephew would laugh every time.
They do wander though- he’d get calls from neighbors who saw his dog miles away, but he never went to get it because it always came back.

My future project is going to be raising goats
I know where there is a guy that raises goats and sheep between Ferriday and Jonesville. He always has a couple of these dogs in the pen with the livestock. They look awesome out there relaxing and keeping an eye out for predators.

They will protect livestock too

Not a house pet, sheds a bucket of fur every day, hazardous size results in a major bite, needs a snow shovel to pick up the massive poop pile. Should not be around small children

I have an Ashbash he is a big puppy until someone is around my wife or kids.
When I'm gone he sits at the front door staring out if I'm home he goes and lays out in his bed.
I had a mobile notary come over and he got there before I got home and my wife let him she took a video of him sitting in between them at the dinning room table. Once I got home he just got up and walked off w/ out a care in the world.

I have one. Best dog I've ever owned.
Contrary to what others are saying, they make great house pets when trained.
