Hey fellas,

Finally gonna make the jump into bow hunting as I've been talking about for several years. So, I'm trying to start acquiring things now to be ready for next year. I've always been a tripod, ladder stand, box blind, or ground hunter. Never climbed before; not necessarily scared of heights, I've just been around too many people falling out of trees in my line of work so I've been skeptical about it. Obviously I'll use a harness. But, what's your recommendation on a good, quality climber to buy. I've looked around but not experienced enough to see huge differences.
I am 6'4" so bigger/more comfortable would be preferred for longer hunts. Thanks.

Ive used an ol'man aluminum climber for q few years. Pros- light, easily packable, quiet to use, well built. Cons- mesh seat not very comfortable, needs perfect trees to use. This year ive swapped to the lone wolf assault lockon setup with the sticks and stick quiver for my run and gun setup. If you plan on hunting in the midwest or big bottoms as opposed to piney woods i recommend a good lockon setup. Much more versatile and once you get the hang of it, it doesnt take much longer to setup

Summit Viper SD is a great stand. The Goliath might fit you better, though.

I've looked at those and the viper sd ultra. Ultra is cheaper (299 vs 349 on cabelas) but not sure why. I've done side by side comparisons but don't notice much of a difference other than Ultra is 1 pound heavier.

I am 6’1” and 260lbs 61 YO, I started tree saddle hunting this year, way more options on trees to climb and I feel a lot safer because I am always attached to the tree. First few times felt sketchy, but I just came back from Missouri and if I would have had my ole man, I could not have climbed many of the trees

How far do you intend on walking with it or will it get set up and left for a few hunts.
I have a summit forget the model but it’s about 15-18 pounds and it’s heavy for longer walk ins 1mile to 1.5miles. It’s very comfortable though with the cloth hanging seat but if I had to walk farther than that I would definitely sacrifice the comfort for something lighter like the x-stand or a saddle.

What style of hunting do you do? Are you packing in a decent distance? Are you moving a lot?

If you are just hunting the same spot over and over again, I'd suggest just getting a lock-on with sticks.

If you move around a lot and pack in a decent distance, I'd suggest looking into saddles.

Mobile hunting has come a long ways and climbers are kinda being phased out. Just loud and clunky and honestly more dangerous than climbing with sticks and a linemans belt.

Summit quality is great. Im hunting a summit viper thats 15 yrs old and im on second set of cables. It bites the tree but releases easy when needed. Very comfortable. The newer sd are lighter as mine is old skool steel and weighs around 30 lbs.

My next climber will be the sd as mentioned here as its only 18 lbs

Tree Walker. You might find a used one. I believe they went out of business.

Summit has been around for a while and make quality products.

Ol Man was awesome. Not sure if they’re still around.

I've been trying to replace my original API since the mid 90's and cannot do it. There just isn't a better design. The chain + aggressive teeth hold better than anything Summit or anyone else has come up with. I was terrified every second i was in my Lone Wolf. I can sleep in my API.

I use a climber bow hunting a lot, especially early season you can move around on food and the deer do not pattern you.

I have an older Ole Man - it's light and compact

Also look at getting some climbing sticks and a lock on, you can be a lot more quiet once you get it set up.

If I'm hunting public land I take the bottom stick home so no one can climb it

When bowhunting you need to try to get 20-25 feet up so getting a safety belt
