Check your outboard engines.

Just a friendly reminder to check your outboards sooner than later. I expect there will be more lower units that have to be replaced than usual. Supply may become an issue so don’t wait until late spring/summer.

What exactly am I looking for?
Just had it serviced and it’s stored in an enclosed garage.

Let that shite thaw out before you run it, at worst, replace the lower unit oil. It’s all good

You are likely fine then. The crack on the lower unit will be visible. Use a light because sometimes it’s only a hairline crack.

I lower mine all the way at the landing every trip. A precaution for the dry wall in my garage.

I use antique motors because I have a weird affection for points. Just replaced a lower and after having to drill in to the old one I'm I'm pretty sure they used vibranium to make them. Imma cry if I have to change that thing again. Thanks for the heads up.

my boat is inside my shop, shouldn't it be fine?

Depends on the temperature of your shop If it’s 15 degrees in your shoo then I would worry

Good post.
I ran mine yesterday morning at dawn to go check some catfish traps behind my house. Had left the boat in the water with the foot down. There was water trapped in the water pump indicator hose that froze. As the motor warmed(slowly, it was 25 degrees) the water started to flow.
Almost took a spill getting in the boat because shrimp boots don’t do well on ice and I’m not used to having ice in my boat .
Thought I was going to fill my traps but only caught about 30. Which I was still glad for because we are going to eat them Friday night.

I started a thread about this last week. According to the majority of posters here, as long as the motor is lowered all the way down, it should be fine as the water would pretty much all drain out.

I’m anxious to go check on mine. I want to hook it up to the hose and make sure everything is ok but I won’t do that until we are done with the freezing temps.

Mine is under a pavillion. Im nervous, but if theres damage done to it, its already done. No sense in worrying about it now, i guess.

Same here. I have mine tilted down as much as possible. Hopefully even if there is water in the lower unit, its not enough to damage anything if frozen.

Boat is stored under a carport. Motor was not trimmed down. Haven’t been on the water since January 5th. How boned am I? Can’t go look it’s not stored at my house.

Just sold my boat... someone else's problem now.

Because of these threads I just went check mine. Parked under a carport, trimmed down, last used on the 7th. No visible issues and prop spun freely as usual.

Bunch of boats on lifts and all will be fine as long as the seals have not let water in the lower. Grease isn’t going to expand went cold but water will.
