CCA and Sen. Brett Allain introduce bill to stop harvesting the 1 redfish over 27"

CCA News
"According to recent studies from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, redfish in Louisiana are experiencing overfishing. The SPR (spawning potential ratio) has been declining since 2005 and is at its lowest level since the mid ‘80s. Escapement (fish joining the spawning stock) and recruitment (juveniles entering the fishery) are also in significant decline. Recreational harvest levels are at their lowest since the days of the gill nets.
We have a problem with redfish, and it’s time to take action. The first step should be to stop killing and harvesting bull reds.
Right now, it is legal to harvest one redfish over 27 inches per angler each day. We support an end to this allowance, making it illegal to take any reds over 27 inches in Louisiana."
Personally, I don't care as I never ever keep one that big because I don't want to clean or eat it.
But LA seems to be ignoring the elephant in the room about Pogie boats. If study's show SPR ratio is down on trout (which they've done nothing about), Flounder (which they temporarily closed season for in winter), and now reds.....

Curious has to how bowfishing outfits will manage this? Never done it but can they estimate the correct size before shooting?

They can't but they can be judicious in what they shoot at. Unless your a novice you can likely tell if a fish may be in the 27" range before shooting.

Agreed, as does probably 90% of people who catch redfish. But what if a kid catches a big one and wants to have it mounted?
I don't think the 1 per angler per day is the major cause of any decline, so why punish the anglers?

Not saying there will be no mishaps but it's fairly obvious as to fish that are undersize, slot, oversized
You'd likely have a similar mortality as bull reds that swallow a hook

I have a hard time believing that enough bull redfish are being harvested to affect the population.
What are the workers fishing on the side of the road supposed to eat if they take away bull redfish?

Since the dramatic comeback of redfish populations in the 1990s, however, Louisiana has lost 10 to 32 square miles of marsh every year to coastal subsidence and ravaging winds and storm surges from hurricanes and other significant storms.
They've been saying it for 20+ years, and now it's happening. Large pieces of marsh break up and actually create more habitat temporarily.
Once those smaller pieces start disappearing, the habitat area shrinks along with the redfish population.

Yep...

Habitat shrinking
Forage biomass shrinking
More anglers harvesting
It's not a surprise that all the more targeted species are being reduced in direct relation to the above

they could go the Texas route and you get a tag for 1/season to allow for that.

I agree with this in general, but I've seen people at the cleaning station with 15 bull reds.
That is very much the exception though. The big impact on bull reds was mentioned in the CCA email, but still there's no legislation to try to do anything about it - it's the pogey boats.
I was out this Monday near comfort island and there were pogeys as far as you could see. What you could see above you was the spotter plane, and what you could see on the horizon was the pogey boats approaching. I counted 4.
Comfort island and the area around that is like 8-10' of water - those boats have no business being there. Why we can't do something about that is baffling to me.

Yes, they can estimate the size pretty well. I’ve only ever seen one bull red in the marsh around cocodrie while Bowfishing. And I can’t recall the last time I saw a bull in a pile of fish from the charter I follow. Most of the times you’re targeting very shallow water, so it’s not common to find something over 27”.
Rod and reel charter captains have them in their pictures pretty regularly.
I don’t have a problem with this bill. I’d bet that the majority of bulls that get killed end up going to waste in the freezer.

Pogie boats kill more each year than most anglers do in a lifetime. Lets stop them from fishing the beaches first.

Agree 100%

The current regs only allow 1 per person at this time. WTF is someone doing with 15 in their possession?
Could simply reduce to one per boat a day.

I don't even keep 1 And don't see too many people cleaning them. I'm not sure this will change anything.

I am with you on this. Once or twice a year I'll be on a boat where we ice one for "couvillion/coubillion" but that's about it.

I would imagine its because those big girls are the breeders.
I like the Texas approach. 1 tag per year

such a shortage of reds that it took us almost an hour to limit on a work trip (multiple boats) last week instead of 30 minutes
