I decided to go bass fishing after work yesterday for a few hours. While on the lake 90% of the sky was clear with a few clouds. There was a very small area that was dark. Good to go. My eyes are glued on my depth finder for the next 30 minutes. I find a school of fish on a hump with a brush pile and I am drop shotting with a worm whacky rig. I cannot get them to bite and I think they might be white perch so decided to grab my pole with a jig. I look up and was just in disbelief. I see a wall of darkness and whitecapping as far as I can see coming from the direction that I need to leave. Where did this come from? I strap down my fishing pole and pull up my trolling motor. Before I can get my life jacket on the rain hits me and a guest of 25 mph wind blows off my LSU cap and almost rips my life jacket from my hands. I’m not going to drive 20 minutes through this crap so I head to a cove behind me and put the power poles down. Bilge pumps were going off every 10 minutes After 1 hour, of freezing my butt off, the wind finally let up. I head to the launch. As I tie to the dock I see the guy who launched the same time as I did earlier. He was in a much smaller boat and fishing on the other bank. He had zero warning when it hit. He said he tied up to a tree and just hung on. We both were shocked on how quickly this storm hit.

Had it happen to me on Toledo with my wife on board. Had to cross from Clear Creek to Lanan. I think she got in one of the rod boxes. Fortunately, I knew someone with a camp there. The cloud went from tiny and gray to huge and black in no time ta all.

Had something similar happen years ago in Lake Calcasieu. The lightning was so bad, I ended up laying on the floor. Saw a waterspout try to form way closer than I ever wanted to see a waterspout. It was definitely top 5 for the most scared I've ever been.

The water and atmosphere are just so full of energy this time of year that storms can build very quickly.

found a bunch of new spots very far south in the Biloxi Marsh one day running from a storm that seemed to block us in every direction we went. We ended up at Shaggys in Pass Christian waiting out the back end of the storm that was just hovering over Bay ST Louis. I thought we were going to miss BigHoss' wedding that night in Baton Rouge because we were never going to make it back to the camp. Boy the wives would have been mad at us

I was on lake Norman near Charlotte on a pontoon back in college.

We didn’t have smart phones. Saw a frikin blue norther coming right at us. We are in the main channel and waves are coming over the pontoon floor.

We just sat it out but it got real, quicklike too.

Proof God hates LSU

I fish in FL and yeah it's happened to me too so I've learned to play things a little safer; not bc of the wind and rain but bc of the flashy stuff

you should probably be more attentive. Especially to the weather.

But yes, we got caught across Lake Decade in a similar situation. Luckily we just jumped up on the deck of a camp to get out of the storm. But it was a shitty experience nonetheless.

many times. One that sticks out...Fishing in a small boat in Vermillion Bay. The weather onshore got pitch black. I knew if it came over the water we were screwed. I waited it out as long as I could, then decided to head into it down a canal, rather than face drowning. Wrong decision. Lightning hit so close, we could only hear a buzzing. Smell of burnt stuff everywhere. Thankfully made it to an oilfield dock and waited till it passed.

Had a similar experience last summer but was 70 miles offshore. We launched out of fourchon and ended up at medusa. The waves were already 2 to 3 fters when we get there but we were catching a couple of blackfin and having a good time. We were keeping track of a storm south of us for about 30 minutes but it started builing rapidly so when we saw the first purple lightning strike we decided it was time. Well we called it a little too late because the storm started engulfing us. We couldnt get on plain with what are now 6ft white caps so we made a decision to go back to venice because we could cut across the waves instead of not getting anywhere going head on to waves heading towards fourchon. The boat stopped multiple times because it had too much water in it and needed the bilge to catch up. We ended up having to call a friend from BR to pick us up from venice to bring us to fourchon. All in all it was like 9hrs of driving in the truck and 5hrs of hell boat riding for 2 hrs of fishing. Needless to say i havent been that far out since.

There are a couple of OB kayakers that were caught/flipped by the waterspout at this year's Paddle Palooza. They will probably chime in shortly.

My tips:
- always carry rain gear. Stowable $30 Frog Togg set has saved my butt from being miserable.

-Invest in some weather apps. "My Radar" gives me 30 minute advanced notifications of incoming weather even if its just "light rain starting in 30 minutes and ending soon". It is very accurate and is at least a reminder to check the radar. It is extremely helpful around the house too for finishing up chores or cleaning up stuff I dont want to get wet. Yesterday I got the notification of that squall line 30 mins before it hit. I had to run and do a 20 minute errand so I got out and did it before traffic gridlocked.

Last time I was on the Bend. I am normally scared to death of lightning, so if I see it I run. I did not see any but the line would float in the air and my rod shocked me multiple times. Just as I said lets go a bolt came down and puckered me up.

I saw the water spout pass on the other side of Hwy 1 from where I was at, maybe a half mile away from it. Luckily I got back to camp just soaked from the rain. Some other guys weren't as lucky and ended up going for a swim and lost some rods/gear. I'd never seen a storm come in so quick. One minute I could see some dark clouds just on the horizon and the next minute I was rushing to secure my rods/gear and pedaling my arse off in a monsoon trying to get back to camp.

It's happened to me a couple of times, luckily I was close to a camp each time so I had somewhere to ride it out. Thankfully hasnt happened offshore yet.

Seems like I remember a few years ago a guy dying while waiting out a storm at a camp. It got hit by lightning

I was on Dixey Bar at the mouth of Mobile Bay one time and got surprised by a pop up storm.

For about 30 min I couldn't see more that 50 ft in front of me. I put the nose of the boat toward a channel marker and stayed about 20 ft from it.

Was all I could do.

Thankfully it didn't last long.
