I use left for worm fishing, punching, and pitching.
Right for everything else.
Years ago when I was a teenager my grandpa took me fishing on Old River Batchelor, LA. He saw me lose a lot of fish on Mann’s jellyworm. A lot of the fish were running with the line and I was too slow setting the hook.
He gave me his Abu garcia left hand reel and told me to practice casting in the yard with it. Now I can do both without thinking about it.

Haven’t been there. I go to a light whitewater area near where I live fishing mainly for smallies and redeye.
I’m right handed. The nice thing about the left handed cast for me is that the rod never leaves my hand after the spool is engaged.

I had been wondering if you were the same weagle that is also an avid kayak fisherman that posts on the Georgia Outdoor News board. I guess it is a different weagle with the same kayaks.

I just realized that you were talking about the Chattahoochee. I have driven over it a bunch and always wanted to fish there but not yet. Maybe one day.

I cast left reel right. No need to switch hands to reel.

Left handed reels (crank on the left) for bait casters and spincasters used to be harder to come by and are still not always readily available. That is particularly true with your less expensive models which are all some can afford.
People learned the cast and switch method when I was young. Spinning reels generally came with the crank set up for the left side and it is easy to pick up so many just went with how it was set up. It’s definitely more efficient to cast right reel left.
I cast right reel left but had to relearn because I started off with the switch. I tried to learn to cast with my left but, alas, I could not do it nearly as well.

I'm actually shocked at the amount of posters here who do it the same. I always get shite from my buddies b/c they cast right reel right "like the pros do".

Spinning- Cast right/reel left
Casting- Cast right/reel right
However, when I am fishing in the marsh, I cast mostly left handed. If bass fishing however, I am not nearly as accurate and must cast right handed to get into tight windows.

Next time I see a lefty baitcaster on closeout, I'm going to give one a go. But, I so rarely use my baitcasters anymore, making that switch probably isn't worth it.

I use open face spinning reels exclusively and I cast right, reel left even though I can switch the handle to the right side, it never goes there.
Guess I'd rather have my dominant hand holding on to the rod.

I cast right. I reel right. That’s the way the Zebco 33 taught me. Only thing the left arm has to do is hold on and fight fish.

The reason I switched is because nearly every really good pro doesn’t do that. Your buddies are full of crap. ETA: maybe they’re not. AlxTgr pointed out to me that most pro’s switch and a quick perusal of several pros seem to support that, including the Michael Jordan of fishing KVD.
There are articles in Bassmaster seemingly once a year or so about the advantages of reeling with your “weaker or less coordinated” hand and using the dominant for bait control and hook-set strength aside from just pure efficiency.

I honestly don't understand how they aren't more popular, most people start out casting right/reeling left with spinning gear so when I picked up a right handed baitcaster I was a mess. Lefty handed just flowed right along. The few friends I've convinced to try left handed reels have all said it wasn't as weird a transition as expected.

I haven't seen any really good deals like that lately, but for the huge clearance sale a few months ago I got a bunch of Lews left handed rod/reel combos that were normally $150 for $40.

I hate combos, but that might be worth it just for the reel. Put the rod out on the street.
