Oddly my in-laws from Cutoff don’t seem to know this. Seem like I remember hearing something that’s pronounced “Boos -tih-neaux”,

For context, “The Sac Au Lait we’re holding tight to the Bustineauxs on Saturday”

Am I misremembering or is that right?

I literally just had this conversation a couple of weeks ago.

It's pronounced "Booskieauxs"... No idea how it is spelled.

Your link has some interesting translations:

Down the Bayou = South

Fuh shore = that's the truth

Up the bayou = North

well considering that cowan is a turtle in one part of cajun land... and a cowan is part of a girls anatomy in another... I'm sure cypress knees can have two meanings....

now I want one of you know it all cajun wanna be's to tell me what the cajun word for lawn mower is.......

it's lawn mower......... things that came along after they were entrenched here took the anglo words.....

was actually talking to a guy from cut off the other day, and said something about a guy from raceland and asked if he knew him since they were both down the bayou

he stated he did know him but corrected me that the second guy was from up the bayou

Indeed it can. There are countless dialects of Cajun French.

I was interviewing an old woman a few years ago and accidentally asked her,

"Can I get a little pussy of coffee milk for my girl?"

She had a semse of humor about it.

As for mower, I'd say les tondeuse. That's the old word for shears. I suppose add auto to it.

Plenty of cypress trees in Cut Off.
I have six and next door neighbors have several.
All up and down the bayou.

It's roseau.

Who came up with this list?

My wife's late Cajun-French speaking grandfather used the term "negresse" on occasion; it wasn't a term of endearment for a Cajun woman.

a woman or girl of black African origin.
