So I shoot a Mathews Z7 E at 70lbs with a 29 inch draw and full metal jacket arrows. I've been shooting slick tricks with it ever since I got the bow. For some reason since they sold the company I don't seem to be getting as good of a blood trail as I used to. I was thinking about switching back to mechanical heads. I shot them years ago but started having problems with penetration from them. Just wondering what some of you guys use. Thanks!

I shoot the ZXT (practically the same bow) @ 70lbs and 29" draw. Carbon Express 350's and Rage Xtreme broadheads. Only non pass through's I've had were a high shoulder shot and a sever quartering shot

Massive holes

Grim Reaper guy here.

I like the chisel tip original grim reapers not the white tail grim reapers

Rocket Steelhead. I still think these old guys are the best broadheads ever made,

I shoot almost the exact same setup as well (Z7e, 65lbs, 28.5"). I had always shot 2 blade rages, but bought some Muzzy MX3s for pigs and ended up shooting a doe with one and Good Lord at the blood! I think just about any decent broadhead, fixed or mechanical, will work fine. I can only think of one deer that didn't get a pass through and it happened to be with a rage. That said, my BIL curses those slick tricks, but I've never tried them.

Shot placement is so much more important than what broadhead is on the tip. As long as your bow set up is shooting the broadhead well you'll be fine.

A lower exit in the lung/heart will result in a red paint trail. A higher exit won't be as good. Quartering too hard to you and you exit back, blood will be low.

Big broadheads give the archer a little more room for error, which will happen no matter how much we practice, over time.

Yeah Rage is what I had problems with in the past. It very well could have been the bow I had at the time. Just been hesitant about Rages ever since. I've looked at the Muzzy's and have heard great things about them

Good thread. Last year I shot a couple of times before the season started, but never looked in my quiver. I took my bow out to hunt opening day and realized I had 2 thunderheads, and 1 rage.

I need to get a new set before October rolls around.

I shot Muzzy fixed blades for about 8 years and lost 2 bucks with deep penetration and little blood in that time period. Was hesitant about switching to mechanical blades also, but finally made the switch and started shooting Rage Chisel Tips and I won't be switching back.

Another vote for the Reapers here. I shoot the standard chisel tip 3 blade 1 3/8" cut. Fly great, really tough, blood trails have been impressive. Typically look like somebody put a can of red spray paint in each hand and walked through the woods. I'm sure others are great, but I don't see me switching up any time soon.

I'll give you my stock pile of Rages and you can give me the slick tricks you have left.

Just got me one of these, exact same. Going to use Rocket Steelheads, assuming that I can find a place out here to hunt. Always had success w the Rockets in LA.

Shot placement.

The geometry of the head hasn't changed so it's doing the exact same thing it always did inside the deer.

For whitetails, penetration should not be an issue. I've decided that the forgiveness of the flight of mechanical broadhead and the massive bloodtrails outweighs the foolproof nature and grater penetration of fixed blades when it comes to bowhunting whitetail deer.

If you want to target larger game, especially Alaskan and African game, then fixed blades have a decided advantage. Elk could go either way.

As mentioned, shot placement is key though regardless of the broadhead.

The only correct answer IMO, "Watch'em drop" makes blood trails obsolete. I use Whitetail Specials.

Grim reapers. The blood trails are ridiculous but they usually don't make it far enough to even have to track them.
