Been wanting to get out there, but due to storage space I can't get a boat much bigger than 16'.

I'm experienced on the water and have driven other peoples' boats in the gulf, so that part I'm not worried about. I just haven't been in a smaller than 20' boat out there. So will I be able to get out there or will I still need to hire a charter?

Getting out there is only half the problem.

It very well could be the kind of deal where you get there, weather jumps up, and then you say WTF was I thinking.

Yeah I know you have to be able to get into the shallow water to anchor near the islands. But what else are you talking about?

The other half he's talking about is the half of the trip where you have to get back to port.

If you watch the weather carefully it shouldn't be too dangerous. Pop up thunderstorms in the afternoon are what can get you. I would go before those start popping up every afternoon. Which is usually around June.

No.

I don’t want to be an arse, but that’s not a good idea. I get nervous in my 21’ bay boat. It may be smooth as glass going out, but it doesn’t take much to get the sound chopped up and sink you. If you can follow a
Mother ship willing to tow you back, I’d still pack a tent and a whole lotta bug repellent to be prepared to sleep on the island.

I hope you understand and just catch a ride on a more sea worthy boat if Breton Island is in your dreams.

This is the point where you have to decide if can and should are enemies.

You absolutly can get there but you should not, that being said I have seen some pretty unseaworth boats farther out there.

what kind of skiff? How high are the sides? Is it self bailing ? How much HP / top speed? Where will you launch from?
I see people all the time poopooing someone in a 16-18 ft self bailing high sided boat and they are in a 20ft 12in sided one waver.
From baptist collet if I remember right your talking about 8-10 miles of open water. Plan your trips right watch the weather and the horizon and only cross if there is no chance of a thunderstorm and you can make it.
I wouldn’t do it in a 16ft jon boat with a 25 though...

Look at last summer and Theophile Bourgeois hit a thunderstorm that took his life in a plane. While it isn't a boat does that concern you in any boat much less a 16-18'? You are responsible for your boat and crew it can get rough going back and forth especially if the wind kicks up in the afternoon.

I make the run all the time from Venice ( about 8 miles of open water) but in a 25' bay boat I've had a few trips where it wasn't big enough with thunderstorms.

If for some reason you decide to go, go in early summer before the storms pop up and know more than one way to get there and get back. IE if leaving from Venice know how to run from Baptiste Collette, Main Pass (PLEASE don't run out the end of it you won't make it), and Emmeline or even Pass A loutre so you have alternative ways to navigate around storms. Also make sure you have a good VHF in any boat you take out there Cell phones only work about half way there.

You have to pick your days based on the forecast and hope that the forecast holds true. If bad weather comes, you can run your boat up on some of the islands out there. I assume you have a GPS to find these islands. It is risky. The smart thing would be to partner with another boat. I have a 19ft. Nautic Star, and I am planning to go out to the Chandeleurs; I am trying to get a friend who has a 24 footer to come as well. We would both bring other friends to share the cost of the gas.

If you have to ask..

I've been out there in an 18' skiff but we had a bay boat with us and it was glass. I go a decent bit in my 22' bay boat and I wouldn't want to go out in anything smaller without backup plan(s). I always bring enough food/gear to stay overnight if needed.

Not telling you to try it or where to launch from but I do it quite often in a 17 foot poling skiff. It's manageable.

This guy went to Chandeleur Island in a 16' flats skiff. It's pretty risky, as you need to go on a flat calm day and bring extra fuel and emergency supplies. He goes into it in the video about how he planned for the trip. He must carry his balls around in a wheelbarrow, but it can be done. BTW, this happened in the last couple of weeks, they were catching hammers.

About ten years ago I went to fish central with a 24 bay champ.Had about 12-15 knot North wind following seas out. Got to the big rig and there is a guy there in a 17 foot flat boat bobbing up and down a like a cork. Wind picked up to 20 knots and seas got worse. He finally left heading back to Hopedale. We fished another three hours and then left to go back. We were about halfway back when we saw this guy basically idling back into 3/4 foot sees getting the shite beat out of him. He had to be black n blue so no I would not advise that.

Jon's trip looks cool. But I'd be a nervous wreck sitting out there in a 16' skiff under those cloudy skies.

My dad is an oyster fisherman in Empire. He was out working in Scofield Bay a few years ago when he got caught up in a really bad squall. If you've never been to Scofield, it's out of Buras and is usually no more than 10 ft deep, if that. Saw a family from Bama trying to coon oysters on some 24 ft skiff and told them to gtfo before it got to them. Guy ignored him and kept working until it was too late. Dad found them clinging to some nearby pilings after their boat sank with the guy's son literally crying that he didn't want to die.

Point is that if something like that can pop up and happen in a shallow bay that makes a man with 45ft boats nervous, what's gonna happen to you if you get caught out there. In no way am I trying to be a jerk. Just be safe man.

Exactly the route I would take. Looking at a 16-18' with a 40hp, very shallow draft flats boat. Shadowcast is really what I'm looking at right now.

Regardless, yeah, I've been fishing the Marsh and Gulf my whole life. I know the summer storms. Hell my first trip out of Port Fouchon was in a 12' jon boat haha. That's not my concern.

I'm more concerned with larger boat traffic, and just how bad the storms/chop can be there. I haven't been to Breton, I've mostly been in the Fourchon area and so it's all new to me.

It looks like the big issue is the storms that can pop up and yeah, as a kayaker, I understand that.

Thanks for y'all insights. It won't be happening for at least another year so we'll see.

It can be done and not a good idea. If you have family just make sure you pay your life insurance premium before you go.
Wear a PDF and use your kill switch, and bring some holy water with you.
