I use 20 or 30 lb braid with a 30 lb flouro leader. I guess there's a greater possibility the flouro gets cut, but 30# is 30# and I'm going to have a difficult time breaking off no matter what.
I also tie an excessively long leader at first. Then I can tie multiple lures before the leader gets too short and have to re-tie another leader.

1. What knot is best for tying braids to a swivel, and what knot is best for tying braid to a hook?
I fish with braid only and I have never broken off with a simple improved clinch knot on swivel or directly to bait/hook. Yes palomar may be stronger for some of the bigger baits like topwaters and other hard plastics, but I still don't feel the need for it personally.

2. When trout fishing, is best to use a leader or not? I have been, mainly to allow something to break off when getting hung up. (Sometimes fluoro, and sometimes mono.)
I don't use a leader when tying directly to swim baits, but always an ~18" leader when fishing topwater (braid gets tangled in the hooks) and obviously a Carolina type rig. We have a small spool of yo-zuri fluoro 20# that we use for all of our leaders. I've never had a problem with it.

I don't use braid under 60lbs because the lighter stuff tangles up too much. I use 20 lb fluoro leader and it does break instead of the main line. Straight to bait you better have gloves or a cleat handy. Last Coco covered everything knot wise.

Now if I am using heavy braid for offshore applications, I'll use a double-line palomar when tying direct, and will tie a bimini twist to create a loop and then a loop knot for my leader connection.
This.

Thank yall, Gentlemen.
I'm pretty okay tying a palomar.
I was just talking to someone over a beer or six, and he is pretty convinced that braid will cut itself using most knots other than palomar.
Didn't discuss a uni in particular. I'm going to have to look at the uni closely.
One other question:
Is there a distinct advantage/disadvantage to using a swivel or not when tying a leader to braid?

Swivel is just one more thing a fish can see

I use a swivel when fishing the beach with a carolina rig or a topwater, but other than that, a uni to uni is better. Like CBD said, a swivel is just something else for the fish to hone in on and swim away from. Also, a uni to uni will glide through the rod guides without any problems.
eta: I honestly DONT think it matters much until you're getting into some bigger fish that could do some damage. Swivel or not will still catch trout when they're schooled up. I haven't really noticed a difference in numbers when using either or.

Yea... we tie a bunch of stuff to get the fish's attention...
(just for arguement's sake)

They think the bait is chasing the swivel. Bonus.

Knot directed at Alex, but am I thinking correctly that you (or I) can't tie a Palomar knot to something already tied to a line?
Example: If you tie a swivel to your main line, there's no way really to tie a your leader to the swivel using a Palomar since you have to loop the knot over the swivel, right?

I use a polymer (sp?) knot for everything.
Same here.

no, you pass through the swivel and loop the knot over the lure

Simple solution. Tie your leader to the swivel first.

Okay Gentlemen,
I'm going to keep using the Palomar for braid to swivel or braid to hook/bait.
I'm going to learn the Uni, which looks very easy for times when I just figure out how to tie a Palomar in a given situation (and I just want to be able to tie more knots.)
Here's a link describing the Uni for anyone that cares.

And just fyi
