For your leader, look into a modified albright, braid to mono break strength is 12.97 compared to a uni 10.17, to flouro MA comes in at 12.65 compared to unis 10.53. I think it is a lower profile knot too. I started using it this year and like it more than uni.

I've spent some time looking into this in the past and cannot for the life of me tie it consistently. Sometimes my uni-uni catches on my eyes when casting on a lighter rods or with lighter baits. Do you have a good tutorial for the MA knot? I've never had my uni-uni break on me so I'm really only interested in it to slim down the knot profile.

ETA: Looks like I was tying it backwards. Hah. I'm an idiot. Here is an Alberto (modified albright) vs. uni-uni knot episode of knot wars. Alberto wins. LINK

I wouldn't say better. I'm not a fan of braided line either. We only do inshore fishing.

I currently run double uni on 50# braid to 20# fluoro.

Drives me nuts hitting the guides, I will be going with the Alberto knot instead.

Slim profile and you can trim the tag end flush.

The only time I prefer braid is when bottom fishing offshore I run top shots or straight monofilament for every other application zero stretch and if you get hung up your fricked

In my experience the only time knots are super important is when fishing flouro. Flouro will cut itself when using a palomar. I've used braid tying uni, trilene, palomar, or double palomar and never had any trouble.

What's the difference between a palomar and double palomar?

Instead of crossing the looped end once to make the circle, you pass through twice (create circle, then do it again), then go around the hook and come up.

Curious- when yall go braid to leader, do you use a swivel or tie line to line?

When trout fishing, is best to use a leader or not? I have been, mainly to allow something to break off when getting hung up. (Sometimes fluoro, and sometimes mono.)

If i'm fishing for specks, i've got clear water. Clear water i need leader. Although I pretty much always use a couple feet of flouro leader to save braid on reties.

Line to line. That way you can reel it up a bit if you need to for some reason. Plus you don't have that swivel swimming out a few feet in front of you're lure that might spook a fish.
