It’s only cheating if somebody calls bourre

You have to follow suit, you have to play to win. Can’t open with Trump card unless you are trump tight. Pot match depends on what is agreed upon, most of the time we play match pot.

Best way to learn to play is to play. It will be a steep lesson depending on the stakes, but if it gets into your pocket enough with reneges and bourre's, you should catch on quick--------------or go broke.

You "HAVE TO" play to win.

so if you know a player to the left of you has an Ace (say of spades) , you have the king and someone to the right plays the queen, you have to play the king, even knowing that you will lose.

This is the hardest part for people to understand

It's part of the strategy of drawing people's cards out.

I was taught if you have the A,K,Q of trumps you have to lead off with them in an attempt to draw out everyone else's trumps and Bourre other players

Yes. If you have a sure winner you have to play em, if you don’t, you burn.

This is where people most disagree.

You have to play to win.

You have to bourre everyone you can.

I was taught that yu can lead trump before broken if it is guaranteed to achieve one of the above.

Of course I played with an old coonass once who lead spades whenever he wanted and everyone there was okay with it. Might have been a iberville parish thing.

Keep the kickers, off suit A’s and sometimes K’s. Number of players makes slot of difference in strategy.

We've always played that you have to play trump suit, but not necessarily your highest trump card

that is because AKQ is a certain 3 tricks and the goal is to bourre as many other players as possible

You lay them down all three together and everyone else must play their highest trump. If anyone doesn’t that’s a renege and an auto pot match

This can be correct if you don’t have the suit played, a 2 of trumps beats an Ace of every other suit.

So if the player to the right leads with an off suit and you can’t follow suit you play your smallest Trump card, but the remaining players have to follow the original suit if they have the cards. If not they can or must beat your Trump card.

If they have one higher

yes that depends greatly on how many players are behind you and whether the suit led has been played before. If there are two or more players behind you playing your smallest trump is likely going to just burn it. If you have already won one trick then playing the small trump is ok

But that’s strategy not rules

play to win (higher card than the winning card in front of you)
play trump if you don’t have the suit
play an off suit if you have neither

and I never keep a K kicker that’s just asking to get in trouble. A kickers only

the proper rules of bourre.

The main strategy is to win the most “tricks” which is each hand so there’s five tricks per deal

Dealer deals everyone five cards and flips one of his over which becomes “trumps” , Trump cards beat all other suits.

Im gonna have to disagree with you on that. The other players must play their lowest trump, in order to possibly keep themselves from bourreing and also to aid in trying to bourre someone else.

If the player in front of you leads with a suit you don’t have, you must play trump. You can play any trump you want if you are first to trump. If you are second to trump though you must play a higher trump. If you do not, you’ve sloughed and that is against the rules of bourre.

That part is what makes the game different from spades and goes for every suit, not just trump.

Obviously if a trump card (or any other suit) is played in front of you, and you cannot beat that card, you play your lowest card of that suit, or trump, or off suit (as required) because you cannot win that trick

If you can win the trick in front of you you have to play the higher card despite what might happen behind you
