So I was just wondering how everyone felt about this. I was brought up that when you approached a person fishing in a boat you slowed down to an idle(no wake) and pass them( not slow down to 5mph where you make a tidal wave). But lately when going out fishing some people wave you by and want you to pass at full speed on by.

How does everyone else feel on this? I don't feel right but if you slow down they keep waving you and tell you just go.

depends on how wide the water area is.

Depends on the distance. In close quarters (small canal/bayou) I slow down and idle. If I can keep about 30+ yards of distance I stay on step. I won’t throw a big wake on step. When I’m in my kayak I’d rather people stay on step if they have enough room.

Please stay on plane when you pass me. So few people actually slow down correctly.

A boat on plane throws much less of a wake, never understood this. Don’t fish in the boat row maybe?

If you’re on plane or at idle you’re fine if you’re an a-hole you throttle down to where you are on plane and throw a huge wake.

Also if you throttle down do it far enough way that you don’t capsize my boat.

Agree. 30+ yards and I stay on top.

If we are close enough that we can talk, I slow down to idle.

This thread should be fun.

This is me. I don't anchor or fish in deep water so I try to keep any passing boats to stay on plane. I don't want people getting stuck or having to idle to deeper water.

If I can give someone 100 feet of buffer then I just keep on running. Any closer and I'll drop down to idle if the water depth allows. If I see little kids on the boat I'll do my best to slow to idle but on plane I put out such a small wake that sometimes it's better to get past them quickly. If it's someone I know then I run straight at them and throw it into neutral at the last second.

Camps and house boats are shite out of luck unless there is proper legal no wake signage or something forces me to pass within casting distance of their dock or boat. As long as I'm in the middle I'm not slowing down.

So it's worth one minute to bang up people's stuff?

This/\ If passing in a narrow area, slow down to a crawl, and like mentioned, not 5 mph where your boat is not level and leaving a huge wake with the arse end sitting low in the water.

I think it is situational. I wish there was a definite rule that everyone knew and followed but it isn't the case.

People are gonna get pissed because they think whatever you did, you should've done something else.

Put some tires or dock bumpers on your shite. The fricken weather can bang up your stuff. Don’t blame boaters.

It's a safety issue more than a wake issue. Passing somebody at 40mph when you have to pass close is dangerous as hell. Lay it down and idle past. If I have to get closer than about 40 yards I'm idling and I expect others to do the same

I agree on the 40 mph. Please go at least 50 when you pass me.

40 yards? It would take you 2 hours to get from one end of Spring bayou to the other.

Depends on the room. I wave people on by if the canals wide enough.

Not really. Just takes common sense and a little patience to not be a dick.

I usually slow down before I get near them, and idle by, unless they wave me through, then I frickin hammer down son! lettem know who the big dick around here is!

As highway to the danger zone plays in my head while I hit max speed of 25mph in my flat bottom
