I have a Catahoula that is fantastic. I “trained” him but you really don’t have to train them as far as finding a deer.....the training is more in getting them to know that’s what you are wanting them to do. As a puppy I would drag and hide pieces of hide from road kills or wherever I could find one. Lots of praise and patience.

At about 6 months old I put him on his first real track on a bow gut shot doe and he had her bayed in less than 5 minutes. Since then he has just gotten better and better. I do not put him on a string though no way could hang onto him as he is big for a Catahoula at almost 80lbs. I use a tracking collar and just watch him till he stops. When he stops he’s either on the dead deer eating it or he’s got it bayed.

I’ve got a rescue poodle who is a tracking machine. We got him when he was 2, so still pretty young and easy to train. But poodles live to learn and are incredibly loyal. He’s very good with kids, too.

I’ve been around a couple of Bavarian Mountain Hounds in recent years. Amazing dogs. The female I’ve been on tracks with is much calmer than the male.

Quick question - do you keep your lab on a leash when tracking? Had a beagle for 14 years but had to put him down this year. Have a black lab and did some training at the end of the season and plan to train her to track now. Bandit was easy to handle on leash during a track but lab is much larger!

I had a half lab half Mountain Cur that was smarter than me. Awesome dog, loved laying by our feet in the evenings. She could be aggressive towards other dogs because she didn't like dogs. She loved Kids. I got rid of her because with a blood dog you have to constantly get them on tracks, if you want nearly perfect success. where we hunt at its primarily archery hunting so a dog was very helpful. The problem is that people will call you during hunting season and you feel obligated to take the calls because of the training needed. So it does interrupt your hunting season. If you are only harvesting a couple of deer a year its better to reach out to one of the state sanctioned blood trailing networks. If you harvest more than that or if you just want the pet and don't mind taking the extra tracks i would recommend the wired haired dachshunds. These dogs are super aggressive, but won't pull you through the woods. Regardless of dog size or whether you run off lead or on lead I would recommend purchasing the garmin alpha tracking system. Another thing to purchase is the book off of amazon called finding of wounded deer. It helps you understand how deer react to being shot in different areas. It helps you anticipate how deer react. One last piece of advice anticipate people lying to you.

Super cool dog, but it needs to be worked everyday. My old man is 12 and still has tons of energy!

I second the recommendation for Devall Catahoulas. I bought a puppy from Randy last year and brought him back for training. First class guy - he does a great job. My puppy found 6 last year that we would have otherwise, never found.

Heads up - he has a long waiting list for puppies so call quickly.

It’s amazing how people think that 4 leaves covered in dark red blood every 12ft is a lot of blood that should result in death. I want to show them a scar on my hand and say “ see that scar on my hand the blood trail it created from my back yard to my porch was more this”!!!!
