Best eating duck on the planet! I take the time to get the legs and thighs on these jokers. Only true herbivore duck.
I guide duck hunts on the Texas Middle Gulf Coast and we have a few areas certain times of the season we can get these guys down. They are a nice bonus to a coastal diver hunt.

Hopefully there are still enough around by then. We had tons of them hanging around all summer but I've been seeing less and less the last few weeks.

No duck is a true herbivore I don’t think. Whitetail deer have even been observed eating fish.

Don’t think I am. Should’ve started the season earlier. Shooting time starting at sunrise isn’t gonna help either

You can find them at Maurepas Swamp WMA. I see them every October during squirrel hunts on the French Settlement tract, just follow the power line from the parking lot/self clearing station.

My neighbors been feeding them. One day best he could count was 94 in his back yard. Ill probably post up next to his beer fridge with my pellet rifle.

Lots of pin feathers so need to skin them is the only minus. Shot a few in the late 90's but hunting a marsh surrounded by rice fields, while hunting Illinois Plant (west side of Lacassine Bayou) of Lacassane Company. Not much sport since it's like shooting flying chickens. Equal in taste to good mallard, teal or woodduck.

I was in the decoys of the rice field last year. I was training one of my Goldens that is more of a pet than a soldier hunter but still want them to retrieve. Anyway, 5 Mergansers came low across the water and landed not that far away. That fish-grabbing bill is unmistakable.
I could have gotten several in one shot but let them fly away. Not even for training purposes.
I will be there this weekend for the Whistlers, if they are still around.
