Biloxi to Ship Island in a tritoon...

During the summer time, would you feel comfortable running a 22 ft tripple toon with a 115 to ship island with about 6 people on board?
I'm saying not a good call.
Got a neighbor making that run and it got me thinking.
What would the ODB do? FWIW I don't own a pontoon but have been on them a few times and drove one through Ponchartrain on a calm day. I'm thinking if it gets really rough you can tear one up pretty easily trying to get back in and possibly shear the deck off.

You just have to have a basic understanding of the weather/marine forecast. It's no different than being in any other bay and a 22 tri-toon is plenty of boat.
I go out there in a flats boat all the time but I pick the right days for it.

On a good day with the right stuff (good vhf and seatow and an eprib) sure. Capt needs to know his stuff. If he's a guy who just rides around on the river cooking hamburgers and wants to go find big water id be worried. Odds are they will be fine.

Coming back can get rough...once you’re there you stay protected by the island, so it can be a bit of a shock when you start rolling back with the seas. Just stay vigilant and be ready to call it once it breaks your threshold.
I’ve had two trips back that I’ll never forget.

Wonder if he's going to take gear to spend the night, he may have to

back in the day a buddy and I would sail out to Cat Island in a 16' Hobby Cat and camp out...
we sailed in several regatta's out of Long Beach Harbor so knew the area...
22' tri hull should be more than enough...depending on the weather and no motor issues...

Of course you can make it out there and most likely back with no issues. BUT it can get rough in the sound in a hurry. He better be prepared for the worst.

I agree on picking the right day.
This boat we're talking about only goes 26mph empty. If you have to run back in, you're not "running" in this rig. Your boat probably moves a little better? I know my boat goes twice as fast and while it's not a game changer it can save you in case of a storm bearing down

Why not just take the Viking or Yacht? Toons are for lakes

If the weather picks up neither of you will be "running" more than 7-10 MPH, I have been there and had a great time in a flatboat and I have had had pretty uncomfortable rides in on my 27ft center console though it was never unsafe.
It is the wave period not the height that is the issue and the MS sound goes from flat to a confused slop in no time flat.
Pick your days more so than your boat unless you are running in a offshore center console.

the sound can go from glass flat to far too rough for a pontoon very quickly. it probably wouldn't be a problem, but i wouldn't do it.

It’s about the same as jumping in a bathtub full of water. Waves going every which way.

I've been out there on a 2 seater jetski and an 18ft Bayliner...

We came back from Martin Island yesterday in a 24’ Triton LTS in 10-15 mph winds and laughed hysterically and also feigned concern for the guy we saw at Isle au Pitre in a pontoon.
Everyone on board was like WTF?

My parents do it all the time with almost that exact set up. Just watch the weather
*edit to be fair, my people go from Gulfport where the excursion leaves

If you are concerned enough that you are here asking the question, that should settle it.

I ran a 16 ft Bass Tracker with a 40hp mercury on it out there before. Had zero problem. On the way in I blasted some Van Halen and smashed white cans. One of the most enjoyable voyages I’ve been on baws. Didn’t hurt that a had a cooler full of pompano

confused slop
This is the key. I’ve been at Ship or Horn Island in my 20’ Hydrasport DeepV and had my arse beat coming back a couple of times. I’m not doing it on a party barge. Nope.
