I posted this on the OT but thought I'd post it here to get y'all's thoughts....The third time is the charm for a Kenner lawmaker looking to outlaw dogs in trucks. House bill 1091 cleared a house committee which prohibits dogs from being in the back of pickup trucks unrestrained.

Rep. Dorothy Sue Hill (D)-Drycreek voted against the measure.

"As you know I live and represent a redneck area and we have a lot of hunters around our house and hunt in our area and all I do is say load up dogs and they roll up," says Hill.

With the 12-2 vote, you will not be able to just toss the dogs in the back of the truck and get on an interstate highway.

This is the third effort to get this bill out of committee by its author Thomas Willmott (R)-Kenner. It's a bill that opponents say is too over the top and too intrusive.

"It's more of a public safety bill, rather than a bill that is being over-reaching," says Rep. Troy Landry (D)-New Iberia.

The bill's author says it's an easy transition to protect yourself and your pets.

"You can put them in a crate. You can use a leash, collar, or whatever. They have trolley systems you can use. There's all kind of different devices you can use. All I'm saying is that you have to use them on the major roadways that we have in the state of Louisiana which is the interstate system," says Willmott.

The law says if you have a dog loose in the back of your truck on an interstate you're going to have to pay $150 and an additional $50 bucks per pooch. The measure now heads to the house floor.

I think it's a dumbass law created by some dumb frick who shouldnt be able to tell me or my dog what to do. Id like to see that dmv stats that support an epidemic of dogs bailing on the interstate and endangering humans. bullshite law and if my fat little Rep votes for it I'm gonna let him know.

Why is it dumb? Seems like a pretty good rule and there doesn't need to be an epidemic to justify having people properly restrain their pets the back of their truck.

I guarantee if your wife or child were killed in a car wreck because some dumbass dog jumped out of the back of a truck you would sue that persons arse off.

Is it really a bad idea in your opinion or do you just not like any new restraints by the Gov. ?

Has this ever happened? I'm pretty sure there are more pressing issues we could tackle.

This probably came about from some legislator's wife seeing a dog in the back of somebody's truck and whining and complaining about how it was cruel and OMG IF IT JUMPS OUT IT COULD DIE and the guy wrote up a bill to make his wife slob his knob a few times.

More stupid emotional legislation.

IMO, the little shite lap dogs climbing all over the driver is more of a hazard than a happy dog in the truck bed

Damn, pretty soon they're going to make it illegal to fart in your own damn house.

While I agree with the reasoning behind to keep your dog secure, I don't agree the push to make it into a law. It's unnecessary, sure I get mad for people not securing their dogs. I have seen those dogs get out and get injured or killed. Good riddance for the owners to foot with the vet bill or a lost pet. Sometimes the only way to learn is the hard way.

As someone who has seen the first-hand results of dogs jumping out of the back of a truck, I think this is a good idea. Are there more pressing issues? Absolutely, but I this is about being responsible for your pet. I agree that there should be penalty for loose dogs crawling all over the owner while driving as well. I always say if you are going to own animals you better take all measures to make sure they are well taken care of because they don't have the ability to provide themselves with all they need. Allowing a dog to run free in the bed of a truck and assuming it won't jump out is being irresponsible.

But an animal gets killed or severely injured in that case. Why not try to prevent that?
