Bicep Surgery Timeframe before Shooting a Bow/rifle again

I had a complete distal tear of my bicep yesterday. What time frame can i expect for full recovery to shoot a bow again? I know i'm out for the beginning of the season, but is it too much to expect to be shooting rifle by December and bow again in January? May even buy a cross bow for early season if i can shoot in October.
Obviously i will talk to the orthopedic/surgeon. Just wanted to know what to expect.

Have they already committed to surgery? The growing trend is to treat these non surgically

It really isnt painful. Just limited right now because of swelling/inflammation.
I did see that alot of people do not do the surgery. But you have to be ok with losing 40-60% of the strength in your arm. Im not ok with that, Especially since its my dominant arm.

Holy sh!t,
how'd you do that?
how'd you do that?

same happened to me a few weeks ago.
they say recovery is 4-6 for simple reattachment and double that for full reconstruction. Then take a min to rebuild strength.

Return to normal activity is generally 4-6 months so MAYBE January but I wouldn’t count on it. Especially the bow.

I had the same injury a couple years ago. You should count on 6 months before you get back near full strength. Just remember, the last thing you want to do is re-injure. Definitely do not take the rehab lightly. Best of luck.

I too can't stress this enough. I've been injured 4 times that required rehab over the years and if you do what they say, when they say it and don't do it half-assed, your recovery time will be easier.
Also, don't try to do things on your own without them telling you how you should do it. The last rehab I did was for a torn rotator cuff surgery on my dominant arm and they gave me those rubber bands to do exercises at home, but showed me exactly how I was suppose to do them. It helped a lot in my recovery.

Others are pretty much spot on. Go see an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in upper extremity injuries: shoulders, elbows, and biceps. A general Ortho Sx can order diagnostic testing (x-rays, MRI, etc..) and confirm your diagnosis. If he/she doesn't do upper extremity, you will be referred to someone within the practice who does. Depending on the severity of the bicep tendon tear, Dr. could recommend conservative treatment (splint) hoping it heals on it's own. Or, Dr. can recommend surgery immediately to re-attach the torn tendon.
Figure 8-12 weeks for physical therapy to increase your strength and range of motion. Perhaps light duty at 3-4 months, and released to full duty around 4-6 months. Most important thing, LISTEN to your doctor and don't rush the recovery. Best of luck and keep us posted

I think it I was in a cast for 6 weeks and rehab took several months. Just simple arm movements, to curling dumbbells of 1, then 2, 3 lbs etc. once muscle memory took over I was fine. But I would expect 3-4 months after you are out of a cast.
This was 1999, so maybe a lot has changed.

Start practicing shooting with your non-dominant arm. If you're resting the gun on the windowsill of the blind, you should be able to fire without the injured arm.
Climbing up into the blind with the rifle using only one arm might be tough, though.

I can shoot left handed free handed. Although I’ve only did that with hogs about 5 times to practice.
I’ve thought about it. My lock-ons are out of the question. But my box blinds are only 4 ft high so i could easily get some steps and just walk in. Anxious to see what dr has to say tomorrow

If you hunt alone then there could be a problem getting the deer or hog on an ATV just to get back to camp. But I'm sure you've considered that-------haven't you????

Most of the time im with someone. My boss hunts with me alot. But i have been in that situation before. Tie a rope around the neck and drag it back with ATV.
wont be able to do that this time, right arm will need surgery. So wont be able to throttle the ATV.
Ive accepted im going to be severely limited this season. Appointment is in 45 mins. Just ready to get it over with.
