Best way to freeze fish

I don’t have a vacuum sealer at my current location and we’ve been getting into crappie every night. I’ve seen people fill up the bags with water but it takes up a lot of room in the freezer. Any advice is appreciated.

Frozen in salt water is the best IMO.
Fill the sink up with water, fill the bag up with water, put the whole thing in the water and squeeze the excess out then seal it all while under water. Best of both worlds. You freeze it in water, minimal extra space taken up, no chance to introduce air into the bag.
It's better than vac packing IMO.

You don't have to fill the bag up with water. Just add water enough to cover the fish and squeeze all the air out. Or go to Walmarks and buy a vacuum sealer..

Trouble I’ve found with not filling the bag with water is that the contents may become exposed and get freezer burn. Think I’m just going to invest in some proper containers for freezing in water. Like those little containers frozen bait shrimp come in or Guidry’s chopped trinity comes in.

Take a 2 liter coke bottle, cut the top out to just about the diameter of a coffee cup, put fillets in and just cover with water, after frozen put about another cup of water (as a cap) and let it re-freeze.
Good thing is if you don't have enough to fill a bottle then the next time you clean fish then stack them on top, cover with water, and freeze again.
You could do the same with a different size plastic jug but a 2 liter is about right for feeding 4-6 people

Vac pack is best. Second best IMO is to pat dry and wrap in cellophane plastic wrap and put in ziplock bag with as much air removed as possible. This will protect the meats surface and take up less room in the freezer.

Nailed it. Pow pow would cut the top off a milk jug then fill with water. Frozen blocks of goodness all up in the freezer

The best way is with a vacuum chamber sealer. You can seal them in with the liquid of your choice, marinade steaks, etc. etc. In fact the first thing that I tried sealing when I got one of these was a bag of water. It laid around on the kitchen counter for well more than a month before I decided to get rid of it. Only a teaspoon or so of vapor had seeped out of the water to form a bubble in the bag. Grandson butchered a 400# hog and it sealed lots of packages of all sizes.

This is the best way, but definitely takes up too much room. Only reason I use a vac sealer is for space.

I’ll be getting a chamber vacuum sealer real soon for fish, frog legs, deer, etc. I have a foodsaver that I used for the first time the other day and it didn’t seal fish like I expected so I ended up just putting them in a ziplock with water. My buddy has been using an avid armor chamber sealer for a while and likes it so that’s what I’ll be going with.

Learned years ago to fill the medium size square Tupperware with filets and then top with water making sure the filets are covered and you have a little room for expansion. Put the top on and now you can stack them up in freezer. Very space efficient. One container is perfect for our family for a night.

Drop filets in a ziplock full of saltwater.
Will stay perfect for decades.
Ask me how I know this.

I vaccuun seal now 'cause I got one but the method above works like a charm...just as good if not better. I catch so many dang fish though the volume of vacuum sealed fish is easier to manage....
