My vote would be S&W 9MM Shield, dependable and very good cc handgun, also very accurate. Fits in my auto console just fine as necessary. Take a look at Palmetto website, good price. Good luck!

You might be able to find a used older Gen 2 or 3 Glock for around $250 but it sounds like the S&W Shield is your best bet.

Surprised TigerOnTheHill was the only one to outright mention that the OP should get a full sized handgun.

If you are not purposely trying to dress around concealing and carrying a handgun, there is no reason to get something smaller than a full sized handgun. This means a minimum 4” barrel and 15 round mag, which is sometimes referred to as “mid sized.”

I see a lot of recommendations for the shield - it’s a great handgun but not one id recommend for home defense.

Does anybody know how often the shields go on sale? I know you can find them or a little over two hundred bucks from time to time, but they were 329 at Academy today.

Also, S&W has a $50 "rebate" going through 12/8.

WALTHER CREED 9MM is full size. Capacity: 16. Perfect for a drawer. I got one, and I'm much better with it at the range, than I was with my Shield. I never ended up carrying anyway, so I got a cheap full size. Don't have to carry six extra eight round mags when I go shoot either.

They have The mags for $20 too

I bought a couple of them.

If you're a Canik fan then you can usually get a TP9SF Elite One series for that $200 price point.

Yeah I thought that was a strange recommendation for a home defense weapon. Big heavy 15 round magazine is what I would look for in a HD weapon.

I haven't shopped around for a while what is the market like for those old 80s wondernines? For a while you could get an all steel framed cold war era 9mm for cheap.

My preferred vice

$300 and a little patience can get you a hell of a deal.
Used, surplus/police trade-in:
CZ 75 (pre B)
Beretta 92 (S variant for sure, with a little luck an older FS)
Sig P series, I got a cosmetically challenged P226
S&W 3rd Gen- easily a 915, not too hard for a 5906
Daewoo DP 51
Old, heavy Ruger P series
Star 30M (for DA/SA)
Zastava CZ 99

of these, I have all but the Ruger, and have seen them plenty of times at that price point. I won't buy one unless it's under $200, just to have one

The CZ 75s and Beretta 92 (particularly the 92SF) at that point are great. Older, but solid as a tank, and still produced (in close enough form that you can get parts if need be).

The Sig P226 is also a great buy, but looks a little rough. But it has it where it counts. This one took me the most time to find. Bear in mind that although Sig still makes them, the older West German ones are slightly different than the new ones. Springs and mags, fine for the most part.

The Daewoo is a sleeper- a great gun, and in current production sold as the Lionheart LH9, I think still marketed. So again, parts to be had if need be.

The S&W guns are great, too- should be able to get a 915 for under $250, and a 5906 for $300. A 5906, which is a full stainless slide and frame, for that price, is a steal.

The Star 30M is a bit of an oddball, big and heavy, but just a really nice shooter. Parts are tough to come by, but the dang thing is not going to break . It is NOT a fragile gun- I've handled 10mm pistols that aren't as stout.

The Zastava CZ 99 is an interesting gun. Kinda the poor man's Sig clone, I think it's a quality gun that got caught up at the wrong time in history (the Bosnian war). Very viable and reliable gun, kinda mushy trigger, kinda bulky.

Steel frames- CZ 75, 5906, Star 30M. Rest are aluminum.

Agreed. I would recommend against a concealed carry gun if it’s strictly for home defense. If it’s a gun your wife might shoot, I would recommend a 9 mm. The .40 may be too much for her to handle.

I have about 7 different handguns and the Ruger P95 9mm is my favorite to shoot and is a great value at around $300. Glock .40 is my second favorite, and packs more of a punch.

Agree with your first point of suggesting a full sized 9mm but this statement isn't true. Using quality hollow-point ammunition, 9mm, 40, and 45 pretty much do the same thing. One is light and fast, one is heavy and slow, and the other splits the difference. I prefer 9mm for the higher capacity and quicker follow up shots. I recommend Speer Gold Dot or Federal HST for self defense loadings.

Why do 9’s have faster follow up if it isn’t true that .40 packs more of a punch?

“Packs more of a punch” implied to me that he was referring to muzzle energy and terminal performance, not felt recoil. There isn’t a whole lot of difference between the two when you choose quality self defense ammo. Plus, if you can hit three times with a 9mm faster than twice with a 40 you’re actually transferring more energy into your target.

Now that's an interesting question - what you get with .40 S&W is that every round, by design, is a high pressure round (think of it as +P "light"). And, you have a larger diameter bore and the weapons are largely built on a frame that was originally designed for a 9mm.

So, you get that combination of high pressure generating a little more muzzle flip which makes - for most folks - for more difficulty getting the second and, particularly, the third shot. Few will dispute that doubles and triples are easier with the 9mm version than a .40 - all other things being equal.

And, at the very beginning of all of this - the "mean" performance of the .40 was probably a little better (or more than a little better) than a comparable 9mm cartridge, in available defense loadings from major manufacturers 20, 25 years ago.

What has changed? 9mm bullets and factory loadings (notably the Federal HST, but other options as well) have gotten MUCH better. And advances in the smaller caliber performance don't scale up very well - so as applied to bigger bore cartridges, the performance gain isn't nearly as much. So, the net result is - you can get extremely similar performance from a 9mm, .40 S&W and .45 ACP (just using the "big 3" pistol calibers) in both gelatin and real world shootings (where such data is available).

So, that's a long answer to your "why" question.

(Full disclosure - I'm a big bore guy , but I recognize that things change.)
