Best “non-pogey” chum to use when mangrove fishing in gulf

I’ve heard cut up hot dogs and dog food. I pulled up next to one boat using pasta. Just trying to get an idea of what has worked well for any of you. Part of not using pogeys would be for a cost savings but really more than anything it would just be a lot cleaner trip and less clean up on boat after if throwing pasta or anything like that vs. getting pogey juices everywhere. Any of y’all have success using anything else besides cut bait? TIA

Catch and fillet a chub, bonita, small jack cravalle, etc

Anything and everything cheap. Literally any food you have that is small pieces they will eat.
Anything, that is, except for food with a hook in it.

Had a guide in Marathon use plain oatmeal. We anchored up over a reef and murdered the fish.
Just free lined a 1/8 jig head with some slightly damp (just enough to make it sticky) ball of oatmeal compressed onto the hook. You'd get hit before the oatmeal had a chance to dissolve.
It made a bit of a mess on the engine covers if it dried so he'd just hose them down every couple of minutes. Better than fish slime all over the boat though...

Bait fish have been wild the past week or so with the water being so clear. Catch and filet them, works just as well plus free and fun to catch.

Go to sams and get a big bag of macaroni noodles and boil them
Use that

I personally saw a guy using macaroni and caught a bunch right next to us. We did well that day too but I still feel like maybe they pulled up a few more than us. So I may try that. I’ve heard dog food and hot dogs but never personally seen that. Tuna in a can is new to me. Interesting thanks for the replies. May have to try some of these sooner than later.
And to whoever said it yes I agree on bait fish. Anytime we join into one it always becomes cut bait.

get a chum churn
whole pogies go in and the mess stays in the water not the boat

Dump a box of instant grits, it’ll float around in a clump and slowly sink throughout your fishing area.

Tuna stomach. Stuff never comes off of the hook. Got to completely bury the hook in whatever you use.

Where are y'all finding mangroves? Could I reach those areas in a 17' skiff?

I only fished mangroves once, down around Cape Corral. My host only used powerdered chum to bring up the pinfish from manatee grass for castnetting for bait. We never chummed the actual mangroves for snook etc. Didn't see anyone else doing it either.

They are discussing Mangrove Snapper. Not the Mangrove plant

Dead "Dynamite Croakers" from BridgeSide work well for chum.

Piggybacking, and another guy from above, squeeze the juice from a few cans of tuna fish into the boiled macaroni and mix it around. Toss a handful out and have fun!

macaroni noodle to get them up. then toss in a live skrimp.
I can get em to eat, but the problem is pulling them out the rig on light tackle. if i go to heavier tackle than 20lb fluoro leader, they don't eat. really annoying. I get the small ones but over 5lb or so they take me to the cleaners.
