We are going to be staying at a beach house near Santa Rosa Beach in late March. Any thoughts on charters you would recommend and/or what type of fish we should be going after?

I'd reasearch for someone out of Grayton Beach.

I booked the MAXIMUS out of destin last summer. It was 600 for a half day trip and we caught mix (30 or so) of red snapper, mackerel, Mahi and a few black drum.

The Captain Justin Hall is a one man crew.

How many people on the boat? We used to fish out of there a good bit when my parents still had a condo in Destin.

Not sure if you've seen the setup at Grayton, but it's a hoot. All the captains launch their boats straight from the beach...pull the truck up and take off. You're in the area, may as well just find one of these guys to go out with.

There's a guy that launches like a 19ft Cape Horn I think it is off the beach. I'd check him out, probably expensive like everything on 30a. I'll see if I can find it.

How many people? Offshore or inshore? Coming from Louisiana I wouldn't fish inshore, your inshore is much better than it is here.

We went out on the Locked Up 2 and had a blast. It was just my Dad and I going, smaller boat, stayed in sight of shore all day, but caught some monsters. I think we did a 6 hour trip. I've been on several larger boats with bigger groups, but this is less time riding out and more time fishing if you aren't filling up a larger boat with guys.

I went on the Showtime out of Panama City a couple years ago. The captain, Ashton, is a younger guy but knows his stuff and worked hard to keep us on the fish. Caught our limits of red snapper, mixed in several grouper, mahi, kings and a couple other kinds of snapper. All in all it was a great trip and will use him again next time I get back that way

Has anyone been Cobia fishing in this area? Seems like that might be a good option for the time of year I'll be there...

Ha well true. But can you catch Snapper and kings from a kayak launched off the beach? For snapper and grouper fishing during the summer, Destin can hold its own I'd argue. Especially for 4-6 hour trips.

Summer bay fishing for reds and trout, you can have a great day of 20 keepers for the boat. But that's a great day. Given our trout slot is 15-24 inches so you can't keep the smaller fish.

Yes that's a prime spot and prime time of year. But if you are only going one day I personally wouldn't recommend it. You may see 10 fish or you may not see a single fish, it can be very hit and miss.

Look at Captain Andersons Private Boats, they all run about the same cost wise. Private boats outfish the party boats every day of the week.

I’ve fished there a few times while on vacation, both bay and gulf and wasn’t overly impressed. Don’t compare to Louisiana offshore or bay fishing. Go in with low expectations, drink plenty of beer and you’ll be fine. The best time I’ve ever had was getting on reds under the Destin bridge in October but were all bulls and out of the slot...but a good time.

Shallow Water Expeditions is great. If mid-summer, they’ll put you on sight-fishing for tarpon.

I've used the Sunrise several times and always had a good time. I think Windes the Captain sold it to his sun and it was renamed.

Here ya go:

Don't waste your time. While in Florida look at bikinis. Fish in Louisiana.

Never actually used them but was close to booking a trip with Back Atcha Charters a couple of years back. The local bait store recommended them.
