What would you guys recommend to help a really skinny/underfed dog gain weight?

Someone dropped off a border collie mix at my parents house. I've decided to adopt her and take her in. The dog seems to have taken to me really well and I've taken a liking to her.

Going to go pick her up probably tomorrow after I get a few supplies today as I've not had a dog in quite some time. Then it's a trip to the vet for a check up and shots.

The previous owner obviously did not give a crap about the dog and appears to have never fed her, which is a shame because she seems to be a really sweet pup.

My parents started feeding her regular dry dog food after she showed up and started hanging out with my dad's lab. However I want to get some meat on her bones as she will most likely need it before getting started on worm treatments.

I'd give her something like Pro Plan or Iams. I wouldn't try to fatten her up to quick. If you want to do that, give her table scraps

any of the upper end foods should work.

Of course you could always ask your vet. They kind of have a knack for things like this.

I figured that Id ask the vet as well, once I find one. I have not had a dog in almost 15 years and I've not used any of the vets in this area since moving here. Just trying to find suggestions to help make a good decision. Last time I had a vet recommend food, I thought a small loan was going to be required

Whatever dry-food you give her, mix some plain yogurt to it.

It was recommended by our vet when we adopted our full-grown boxer 3 years ago. She went from 32 pounds to 60 pounds in about 12 months. Incredible transition.

Anything from Muenster Milling.

You can order it directly from their web site and receive free shipping.

One of the best dry dog foods you can buy. Very rarely sold in big box stores for pets.

Just get some good, dry food and feed her like normal. Once she starts getting meals regularly, she will jazz up in no time.

I did the same thing with a Pit that was hit by a car. He was 68 pounds when I first got him. Now he's 100

look a few of them up on Facebook and read the reviews. I did that, found one with glowing reviews, and now I love my vet.

I would recommend NUTRO Natural Choice. It runs about $55-$60 for a 30# bag. A bag last my lab a month. Get many compliments on his shiny coat and over all health. My vet even asks me what I feed him. I have used it on my last 2 labs and my neighbor has even converted over to it. It also helps the labs with arthritis. I know there are several higher end foods that work just as well. That's just my preference and I can tell it works. Typically the better the food you feed it, the smaller the portions you will need to give it. And the lesser amount of food equals lesser the amount of "land mines" in your yard. Hope this helps.

I'm not going to name one particular one but suggest a food that does not start with a grain on the contents.

Our dogs really like the costco brand dog food.

That's the second Purina Pro Plan suggestion, looks like I'm going to stock up on it.

Thanks guys, I appreciate it.

I feed my #120 lab pro plan focus large breed and have since I got him at 6 weeks old. He gets a couple raw eggs a week to help with his coat.

You just put the raw egg in with his dry food?

I am going to have to try the eggs, we have been putting coconut oil in his food to help with dry skin and shedding. It has help but that shite is expensive. You just use one egg a day?

You’d probably be ok with 3 a week. Just try and adjust.

Yeah, he loves raw eggs. I drop one in whenever I think about it, 2 or 3 a week.

If you have a Costco nearby, the Kirkland grainfree food is awesome.

My bulldog was skin and bones as a pup. He got a bowl of pasta topped with olive oil every night.

Honestly, just feed some dog food qnd maybe toss an egg or two over her food.

ETA: greenhead, a lot of dogs don't react well to proplan. For mine it was the corn making them itchy. If it isn't that, canola oil is cheap, and healthy enough to wear your dogs can have a bit over their food.
