Looking at both right now for a Christmas gift to myself.

Would sit in the nightstand for home defense. I'm comfortable with the Berretta from my time in the service but I know the Glock is popular and people don't like the double action. I prefer the slide and mag release and the Berretta but have limited experience with the Glock.

What are the board's thoughts?

I think you should go with what you're comfortable with.

I just bought a new 17 gen 5 really like it, I wasn’t a fan of finger grooves so I decided when the 5 came out to give one a try.

I was the same as you, carried a 92 for 8 years and never thought I could switch to a Glock. I now have the 17 and 42, both are my CC guns. I love both of mine for carry and shooting. But couldn't go wrong either way.

Get a 92FS. Put in a "D" spring kit, metal trigger and guide bar, set of VZ grips, extended mag release. Something you'll love taking to the range.

I own a Beretta M9 and a Glock 19 and shoot them both really well. If you're comfortable with the Beretta then stick with it.

Beretta 92 vs Glock 17

While both of these are full sized 9mm double stack handguns, they are in two different categories. One is an aluminum-framed, hammer-fired gun with a slide-mounted safety and one is a polymer-framed, striker-fired gun with no manual safety. It's hard to compare the two.

Well since you don't plan on carrying it concealed I could see this as being a closer comparison. The Beretta is considerably heavier so would be a worse choice if to be carried concealed. Keeping it in a home defense role levels the field between the two.

So it's gonna come down to personal preference. But to summarize my thoughts:

1. I typically enjoy shooting striker-fired guns more since I don't have to worry about a manual safety and I get the same trigger pull every time.

2. On the other hand, I like shooting metal-framed guns as well since most of them are unbelievably soft on the hands, especially in 9mm. My Beretta 90 two is my go-to for new shooters and I will usually attach a Streamlight to it to reduce the recoil even more. It's like shooting a 22 - I have yet to find a single person who says it's too much to handle.

3. The Beretta 92 has a soft spot in my heart since it was my very first gun and I will never sell mine. It's also battle-proven having been with our military for decades (and also for me - 15k rounds and counting). I can't remember the gun ever failing.

I have an M9 and would probably go for the Glock. I hate not being able to just buy a pair of night sights for it. The trigger is horrible.

It does shoot very well, the recoil is negligible, it shoots fast easily, and it’s reliable.

I’d still go for the Glock given the choice between the two. It’s cheaper and easier to put night sights on it.

All things being equal say you wake up all groggy with an intruder coming through your bedroom door you grab one gun and pull the trigger and it goes bang. Same situation you grab your other gun and pull the trigger and nothing happens and in your last seconds you think damn did I remember to flip the safety.

Now everyone jumps in and says you have to train, train, train. Muscle memory blah blah blah.

shite happens. Keep it simple.

Love my Glock 17 and prefer it over a DA trigger. Plus I prefer having an accessory rail for a light.

A DA/SA gun on the nightstand should sit hammer down, safety off.

I love DA/SA pistols. If the question were sig 226 vs Glock 17 it’d be the sig by a mile for me. I just need night sights on a self defense gun and how much of a bitch it is to put them on the Berreta is strike 1 2 and 3 for me.

Compared to a Glock? Not really. "D" spring is a cheap and easy install anyway. Worst that can be said is the SA on the Beretta has a lot of take up but it breaks and resets better than any Glock can hope for without a custom trigger job.

Rent/borrow one of each and shoot them a lot. Initially, I liked the sig 226 more than the 92fs, but the more I shot both, the 92fs came to be my favorite handgun.

I don't like the way glocks feel, but that's just me. Get what's comfortable and feels good

Sig P226. You can thank me later. And, at that point, get the Mk25, pretend the anchor has a globe with it.

I have a 92FS and I can say out of all my handguns, it is the one I can’t shoot worth a damn.

I have a 92FS A1 that I can't get to shoot reliable for anything. Since I got the thing brand new I consistently get FTFs. I've tried different ammo, different mags, and had somebody else shoot it. Nothing works. It pisses me off because when it does feed it's very accurate and smooth. I just can't figure out what's going on with the FTFs. It's to the point now where it's just a safe queen.

To the OP, from my bad experience with my 92 I would go with the 17.

I find it has the worst trigger of any full size handgun I’ve ever shot.

Sorry to hear you’ve had bad experience with your 92. My guess is your gun happened to be a lemon because I rarely hear of 92s failing. But I can understand your frustration.
