Quit fishing years ago, but I used only Calcuttas for a long time, then switched to a Curado. I preferred the low profile. I mainly switched because my Calcuttas kept breaking. Drag issue or something. You could pull line out while reeling, or reel without it retrieving. My closet is a graveyard of Calcuttas. At least 3 or 4 on the shelf. The Curado never gave me any issues. But once I started using it I preferred the low profile.

I have a friend with two round calcuttas that have only been used once or twice that he could be persuaded to part with.

Round. My hands are wide, and it feels like they're eating the low profile reels

Grew up on ambassador 5500’s. Have graduated to low profile about 4 years ago and don’t plan on going back. Low profile is so much easier if you plan on casting a lot

Baitcasters: round or low profile?
I can deal with round on something long and slow like South Carolina rig, but not much else.

If you are under the age of 85 and fish with a round reel for anything other than tight lining or free lining with live bait or dead shrimp you’re doing it wrong.

That doesn’t include offshore fishing.

All I fish with is a pair of calcuttas and a spinning reel. Never had the need for anything else except my perch jerking stuff.

Low profile. Technology is a good thing. My original Ambassadeur hasn’t been used in years.

I have both low profile and round ones.
Back in the 80’s the Abu Garcia 4500 and 5000 were the kings.
I always used the 4500 tricked out with bearing in the cog wheel.
You did see some guys use lew’s childre, Abu Garcia 1000’s , old shimano bantams pre green ones, and quantum mg’s.
