I have a Jeep TJ that is having some steering issues. I’ve had the suspension checked and and alignment. I’ve also had the tires balanced.

It’s still “floating” when driving and there is a good bit of play in the steering so it may need a new gearbox. The last shop i had look at it said “oh that’s just jeeps” so I would like to take it somewhere where someone will actually look at it and be able to fix it.

Do any of y’all know a good Jeep mechanic in Baton Rouge?

I’m changing out the stabilizer tomorrow. I’m hoping that will help with the driving portion.

The steering wheel itself still has about 20 degrees of play in either direction before the tires turn. Do you think the stabilizer would help that too?

No. Not that.
Get some one to turn it while you look at the steering box and linkage. You may see something that can save you a ton of money. At least you will know what to tell the people who fix it.
Ole school jeep bro.

I appreciate the info. I’ll check them out. At least if they tell me it’s “just jeeps” then I guess it really is lol.

Jim’s Wheel Alignment, like 3rd or 4th generation. I went there a few months back. Dealership told me my alignment was off. Made an appointment, within 20 minutes, alignment was ok, no charge.
I tore the guy up at the dealership.

You have to make an appointment. But they get right on it when you drive up.

Look for "Planman" death wobble videos on YT.

I know you didn't mention DW but he does give a good overview of the TJ steering system and potential problem areas.

20degs is alot to me. My TJ (or CJ or current JK) didn't have that much play.

ETA: clarity

I’ll check this out. I thought I had my DW issue fixed, but it did it again yesterday. So back to making that my first priority to fix and then worry about the rest.

Searchers is actually now in Livingston/French Settlement, between Moonlight bar and French Settlement schools.

I'm guessing you have a slight lift and/or bigger tires. Your wibble issues are likely a combination of ball joins and needing an adjustable track bar. Metalcloak makes a really good track bar.

Phillp at Searchers will absolutely solve your issue if you don't want to tackle it yourself.

3.5” lift and 33’s. I have an adjustable trackbar so I don’t think it’s the trackbar itself, but may be the drop bracket for the trackbar. The ball joints and axel u joints are new, it’s been aligned and wheels balanced last week. So no clue what’s still causing DW unless it’s the trackbar mount.

I talked to Searchers this morning and they said I could bring it in for diagnosis. I greatly appreciate the suggestion!

Did it just start doing this after you changed the ball joints and axel u joints?
