Did it the other day and really enjoyed it. Found quite a few coins, mind you nothing valuable, but it was fun. Found the first one in under a minute.

We have two at home. The boys were crazy about them. I’ve used them a few times and it is a fun thing to do!

I've never done it, but I'm sure it's fun.

We did have a guy stop and ask permission to detect our yard. I think his battery died before he found anything good.

I have been metal detecting as a hobby for almost 30 years. I don’t know where you live but south Louisiana has a ton of places to hunt. Don’t ever believe that all the good stuff has already been found. As technology improves, the old spots turn up stuff that wasn’t findable before. That leads to my main advice - invest in a quality detector. It will make your hunts a lot less frustrating and it will last longer in the long run.

Where do you live? If you have questions, fire away.

Ive got one at my parents house down the road. Haven’t used it much, though. My pawpaw used to detect all time along the MS River in the Natchez/Vidalia area. Found a ton of old glass bottles, a bunch of Minie balls, and a couple of cannon balls.

It depends on what kind of hunting you’ll be doing and your budget. Fisher has had a great reputation for finding relics (i.e. you’re hunting a very old site and you want to dig everything) for a long time. White’s (the brand I have) is okay for relics too but also great for coins, and Garret is a brand that has the reputation for being a beginner’s brand but that’s because they are so easy to use. Garret was one of the first big brands and they are still around for good reason.

You never know what you’ll find, especially in a place where people lived in the past. People might get nervous if they see you walking around the levee with a shovel though! The only person I’ve seen find a gold coin was metal detecting but saw the coin sitting on top of freshly plowed ground.

Man, need to find one of those glass detectors...

I was pretty big into MDing when I lived in MS. Mainly interested in WBTS relics. Lots of research. Getting permission is the hardest part and can be demoralizing.

Found some cool stuff, minie balls, an enfield bullet, nose cap/fuse from a confederate shell in a Union position where the earthworks are still visible, a Union belt plate with leather still in the hooks. Hunting around a really old church, I popped out an 1837 dime minted in NOLA. It literally looked like it was dropped that day. Funny how it’s now tarnished.
Found a cavalry shoulder scale / epaulet in downtown Brandon, MS. Grants HQ was in the vicinity. I really missed out on that site. It was being cleared for a bunch of,houses, and tins of dirt had been trucked off already, and I found that on the edge, where dirt work had not been done yet. Hate I didn’t find that a few months earlier.
My wife has an aunt in MS, who’s land was used as a Union corral on Sherman’s Meridian campaign. She has to run people off all the time. I’ve not yet had a chance to hunt there, but would love to.

Looks like a winner.

I hate researching these detectors because it makes me want to run out and buy one. Shop around for the best deal. If there’s a hobby shop that focuses a lot on metal detecting, you should look into buying there. Tell the owner that you’d like to buy one but you don’t know any good spots. He might share info if you buy from him.

I live near several old gold mines, from the early 1800s. I have had a little luck panning before, and I was thinking that a metal detector might make it easier. What might be a good model for that?

Jase Robertson does this as a hobby

Some people call metal detecting "Dirt Fishing" but maybe it's better described as "History Hunting." Photo courtesy of Jase Robertson, COO of Duck …

Live in Monroe, but travel south every 2 weeks.

Q - when you hunt someone's property whats the protocol for "sharing" your find. Do they ask for half? or what.

Garret is another good brand for basic coin shooting at a good price point.
