Anyone have a Rock Island 1911

Looking to get my first 1911 but want something that's more entry level(<$1000). This one caught my eye and is priced about $120 cheaper than Cabela's before taxes. Most of the reviews I've read are good but I'm looking for more personal opinions, mainly on the ambidextrous safety. TIA

I have and ATI (also made by Armscorp in the Philippines) and its a great entry level 1911. Very tight fit and shoots like a champ.

Good 1911 for the money. Some will complain about cast frames but that is not really an issue.

Good for entry level but I would suggest the Ruger SR1911. It should be around the same price but it is made in the US. The SR1911 is often regarded as the best entry 1911.

I've never bought a gun from an online store. I know about the $25 FFL fee but do I still have to pay sales tax?

My dad had one, and it was a POS. Sent it back multiple times, but it never worked right. Dunno if it was just a bad one, but he ended up selling it after about 200 rounds down the pipe

Yes.

I have a Para Ordinance expert commander that I bought for about $500 out the door.
Probably have around 1000 rounds through it and it's been great so far.

You purchase it from the website not the FFL you pick it up from. The only thing you pay the FFL is his/her fee for doing the transfer. Every FFL charges a different fee. Make sure to check with them before ordering because some charge really high fees to avoid having to do FFL transfers or to get you to buy from them instead of ordering online. As for the sales tax, treat it like any other online purchase you would make from an out of state vendor.

Precision arms has one that must have a million rounds through it. Still shoots great.

I bought one off of Gunbroker for $325. I wanted a GI 1911 for my first one. It goes bang everytime.

I had that exact pistol before. Not a bad gun, but I did end up selling it.
If you want best value for your money, get the Ruger.

I've bought a number of guns online and never had to pay sales tax, except for the guns I bought from "Gallery of Guns". GOG had all kinds of extra "fess" added to the transaction. I no longer use GOG.
Propandandalf has it right.

How does a gun fall apart? I'm genuinely asking because I don't understand.

jms5724, I don't have an RIA, but I do have a Citadel. Citadel's are made in The Philippines by the same company that make RIA. When I bought the Citadel, I was in the market for an RIA, but the Citadel had better accessories (target hammer, target trigger, high profile sights, lowered ejection port and beaverail safety) than the RIA. The RIA you referenced is similar to my Citadel except mine doesn't have an ambidextrous thumb safety and is an "Officer" frame. My Citadel was for cc so I didn't want an ambidextrous safety anyway.
As far as the gun itself, I've been very pleased w/ it. The only thing I don't like about it is the Parkerized finish. When I bought mine it was advertised as a "matte" finish, but it's Parkerized. Some like Parkerized finishes, but not me. The gun has been flawless w/ hundreds of rounds shot through it, is accurate and has a trigger that breaks at 4.25".
Having said that, my next 1911 will be the Ruger Lightweight Commander. It runs 6-8 ounces lighter than a similar all-steel model, but it costs approx $690 You might check out the American Classic/MetroArms product line. They're also "entry level" guns and made The Philippines. My A/C has a very nice deep blued finish (not Parkerized) and 3 dot sights.

After about 4 rounds the slide was stuck in some strange position. Upon inspection, I noticed the half of the ambi safety, plunger/spring were no longer in the frame, and the other half was only barely wedged in the other side. Took some time to work the slide free but when it came loose the rest of the safety fell out as well.

Ruger makes one hell of an entry 1911 for under a grand. I strongly recommend it. Here's my video review of the regular Commander sized one with the steel frame. Note that this is not the lightweight one as that one has an aluminum alloy frame.

I have a Citadel, same company, and it's a great shooter. I've run a few hundred rounds through it and it's never let me down so far. My buddy has the RIA like the one you linked, only in 10mm, and I love that gun. I wish mine had the high vis front sight like that is my only complaint.

If I were buying a "cheapo", I'd buy and Auto Ordnance A1. I have one, very accurate and no issues except for heavy trigger, but I fixed that issue.
