It’s very common in blue dogs. Might be demodectic mange. It goes away after a while.

I had a blue and white Amstaff and had the same problems when he was a pup. It should go away as she ages.

Sounds like a short haired dog from the mix so I am guessing the brushing won't help much. I have GSDs and brushing helps. Baths too. One of them has some type of allergy that he gets a shot for every month. The shot really helps him.

Generally the go to is to try a different food first. It’s the least expensive option before you start making appts with your vet.

My experience is the fillers, particularly corn, can trigger a reaction.

I would try a good lamb and rice blend first.

Ours. Chicken allergy. Vet said it’s fairly common but damn the dog food and snack industry has barely and slowly caught up, nearly everything has chicken/poultry in it.

My Wife bout a Goldendoodle that was allergic to every food we gave him. We tried them all, and I do mean all. We were in Atwoods one day and saw a food called WILDOLOGY FETCH LINK

The beef flavor changed it all for him. No more scratching.

I believe the preferred term is Mongrolian Terrier.

Our 7 yr old terrier has ear and skin issues. Our vet says it’s yeast on his skin and ears. We give him a little plain Greek yoghurt once a day. Also he gets a shot every 12 weeks. Our vet doesn’t like apaquil for long term use. She says it causes their immune system to not work correctly. If they get cancer or serious illness it kills them quickly because the immune system can’t fight off.

I add apple cider vinegar at end of their bath. Seems to really bring her comfort. Don't get it in the eyes obviously. Also dilute it in bathwater. Don't pour it on straight. All prior mentions by everyone help too.

Does all of this apply to cats? My mother had to be put in a nursing home so i had to take her cat. While I’m not a cat person he’s pretty easy. Scratches all the time. No fleas. TIA.

Try this change the food for a few months, ween them off whatever they are eating and get rotisserie chickens from Costco or something decent and add in rice and frozen mixed vegetables maybe some sweet potatoes etc. U can add a vitamin or something if u want.

I know this isn’t cheap but we did this and all that scratching shite and vet trips disappeared. Then you at least know whether it’s the food

Lamb and Rice Diamond Naturals.

Tested negative for demodex, skin mites, etc.

We'll keep a good eye out and likely work in some food changes.

And sorry, the mongrolian terrier comment must have come from a lab owner.

As another poster said it is either an allergy to their food or something in their environment. Regardless, 'apoquel' has done wonders for my two itchy fur babies. Merry Christmas!

Beside food allergies make sure you bath your dog every 2 weeks with Dawn ultra ( gentle but the best degreaser) followed by a medicated shampoo if prescribed.

When a dog is itching or biting such activity causes skin oil glands to secrete sebum upon which bacteria grow causing the “ doggy smell”.Also when dogs lick a lot they moisten the skin and besides bacteria yeast can start to grow causing extreme redness, roughing and thickening of skin at which time you need either an internal yeast medication or a yeast shampoo weekly.

So many owners believe you should only bath your dog, especially labs, only every few months. In a perfect world possibly so but with food allergies and outdoor pollution which cause skin allergies and itching and biting you have to address excess sebum on skin with secondary bacterial and yeast growth and infections.

In regards to OP putting pet outside summer time heat esp in La. will make skin inflammation worst .

Not if his allergy is dust mites, storage mites or common indoor fungi. Also, 4 months old is kinda young for allergies to show up.

Chicken seems to be a big culprit. I can bet you a raw diet would cure it however I hear farts are horrendous

My dogs issues cleared up switching to salmon as protein. Never tried a raw diet….. we don’t have time for all that.
