I just got orders out there and I'd like some input on what people have done for deer hunting the area.

Take up kayak fishing
My buddy (in the Navy) has been there for 1.5 years and hasn't found anywhere worth trying to hunt that's decently close. He has spent his down time kayak fishing out of la jolla for sand bass, rock fish, california sheepshead, and yellowtail. That's what I'd recommend.

Didn't realize those hippies allow hunting in their state.

There is a shite load of outdoor opportunities and normal people when you get outside of the major metropolitan areas.

Outside the 4 major cities metro area, CA is fairly conservative.
I have a customer that is as conservative as can be that's between Sacramento and Tahoe.

Louisiana has around 300,000 acres of public land available for hunting and fishing, California has has over 7 million. With that, and the many other outdoor activities available there, California is probably more deserving of the title "sportsman's paradise" than Louisiana.

No state that has banned trapping can be considered a sportsman's paradise.

You can kill 7 mallards like 100 days out of the year. Shoot elk, whitetail, all kinds of other big game
Catch huge bass and pretty good offshore fishing too
Ain’t the worst place in the world to be

Look up the kayak fishing - you can catch tuna from a kayak in certain spots down south.
My brother in San Fran went sea duck hunting on public land and can see San Francisco high rises.
He routinely goes quail and pheasant hunting on public land or ranches. It’s tough up/down hills though.
A few hours north of LA is like cowboy country - deer, turkeys, mule deer, etc.
Turkeys eat grapes, so maybe try to check with a vineyard? Same with the deer.

CA is not a great big game part of the country. Maybe some wild hog opportunity.

Arizona for Coues and desert mule deer with bow. I believe both tags can be had over the counter.

i am pretty sure you can hunt in the cleveland national forest just east/northeast of san diego. we drive through it on our way to san diego along interstate 8 - have always wanted to stop and explore but we are usually on our way to the beach.

This is correct. Depending how long you are out there I would be buying points in several states and hunt OTC for the fist yr or two.
