On a serious note Mercury is announcing a “game changing” motor Thursday. Would be pretty crazy if it really was a 600 V12

I don't see it. Batteries would be a massive problem.

Agree. Tech isn’t there yet for electric outboards. Your range would be terrible and you’d have to have a massive battery bank

Why would tesla like HP and battery weight not work? I'm honestly asking, no idea, but they make it work obviously

I know they make them, but take a look at their specs. The 80hp lasts 6 hours with a range of like 30 miles...... but at 5kts

At 25kts you have like a 16 mile range and run time of less than an hour.

Like I said, range will be absolutely terrible with current battery tech

600hp V12. It’s real. They just stuck another dagger in Yamaha. Will be around the same weight as their 1000lb 425, but 600hp is just the starting point.

Those cowlins are so damned ugly. It pisses me off

Hopefully its a diesel outboard that doesn't totally suck. Itd be a giant leap forward in safety to have reliable diesel outboards.

I wouldn’t say that. The bulk of Yami sales are not the 425+HP.......and the reliability reputation of Yami vs Merc is still a wide margin.

Like saying Chevy has put a dagger in Toyota because they are dropping a 1000HP motor in a 1500.

Now, does this come into play with the top 1% of money people pushing Freeman’s, Invincibles, etc.? Sure. But the millions of bay boat and sub 30’ people are unaffected.

The company I work for has a boat w/ an electric outboard, its 25 hp kinda ... its on a 16 ft aluminum boat. Batteries 500 lb. Will run 2 hrs at full throttle, doesnt plane. Ya I work for an electric company and its a PR move. Cost they wont say. With the battery issue I dont see a electric outboard for a while

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the Yamaha 300 have severe problems with lower units and flywheels? I know of a charter company that keeps spare lower units in his inventory because of that (or so he says).

Ignorance is pretty widespread.

Those cowlings are freaking awesome.

A 600hp V12 isn't going to help that for mercury. Thats a long crankshaft, assload of valves/bearings/etc to bust up. V12's are pretty smooth running by nature so hopefully it'll hold up. Sure to carry a ridiculous price tag and some serious maintenance costs but for the ones that must go the fastest with the biggest this will fit the bill.

Mercury gets some undeserved skepticism for reliability, carried over from the old days when everybody knew somebody who had a mercury spit pieces out. The new stuff is great. I rode on a 38 yellowfin with trip 350 verandos that had nearing 4000 hours on all 3 original powerheads.

It is 2021, not 1980. They are both as reliable as you will find in an outboard. The biggest difference now is that Mercury’s lowers will last more than 600 hours. I know of several large and small charter companies who keep many spare Yamaha 300 and 350 lowers. The largest company in Venice, who has switched to almost all Mercury power, has 2 spare Mercuy lowers for 24 engines. When they ran mostly Yamaha, they had 8 spare lowers for even less engines. Most of the time, all of the spares were in use.

The 350 Yamaha has flywheel problems that they have never been able to resolve to this day. That’s been over 10 years.

Most charter companies keep several spare Yamaha lowers. 600 hours and the seals are toast. Most never get changed and blow after ingesting water.

How much gas would 4 600hp V12s drink? I know a single 300 gets what 4-5 mpg on plane?

That setup would literally be gallons per mile

Not to mention weight of the battery bank would greatly decrease the number of people and gear the boat can safely hold.

Ok. I was shooting from the hip. In all honesty.

I did some quick digging and apparently they are neck n neck now with Mercury having more newer offerings.

On the guide level usage of 300+HP engines, apples to oranges. My boat will never reach 600 hrs......it’s not an offshore boat, so.

Apparently, I was essentially wrong. But I’m never wrong!
