There was a time in my life I knew how to do it no problem. Those days are apparently gone. What’s even worse is talking about how much I know about fishing to wife while about to spool a spinning reel, only to look like a complete moron and her trying not to laugh at me.

I have no issues with baitcast reels but damn. I finally thought I had it and then ran line through the rod and looked down and found

I realize meme is a baitcast but best I could find

I don't understand how you can have issues spooling a spinning reel.

Use braid, it has no memory.

Give your wife a pencil to hold the roll of line on.

Run the lines through the guides tip first.

Layer a single piece of electrical tape or masking tape on the spool to prevent slipping. If your spool has a rubber band or etching cut into you don't have to use the tape.

Open the bail

Tie the line around the bail using a good knot such as the uni knot. And cut the excess tag end.

With no extra tention on the line, reel in about 3-5 wraps of line.

Set your drag to about 3-5lbs of pressure.

Hold the rod tip up and have your wife apply tention to the roll just enough that it doesn't pull off drag when you reel.

Reel in all the line until it fills the spool to about 1/16"-1/8" from the lip of the spool.

Cut the line.

Finished.

I’d imagine he is talking spooling mono.

I have never heard of this. What’s your process? I’ve spooled a spinning rod while driving a boat a zero dark thirty because I forgot to do it the night before. I honestly can’t imagine where you’re having issues. Now I’ve spooled it a forgot to reopen the bail, or spooled it and missed an eye but never ended up with a birds nest.

What about line twist with braid. I usually do it like you mentioned. I was thinking about trying one of these out.

I've always heard you'll wind in twists if you spool situated like that device. You want to wrap with the spools in parallel and not perpendicular. Also, wrap in same direction.

I still get twists and end up running it out behind the boat to wind back on. It'll get the twists out.

It’s probably a 20 year old reel. I haven’t spooled it in at least 15 years as I seldom use spinning reels. It was so bad I can’t even tell you my process. I wouldn’t call it a birds nest but shite happened and I couldn’t figure out why

I do appreciate the responses everyone and will learn from them and also a link or 2 shared here

That device spins the spool around as you reel it’s not stationary

Not if you want to avoid line twist. Those work for a baitcaster, not so much for a spinning reel. Think about how the line comes off a spinning reel; that’s how you want to spool it.

This. It will spool "off" the line spool and spool "on" the reel. I have never had an issue. I have done it just like a revolving spool reel also and usually have no issue but I change line on spinning reels every 3-4 months no matter what. You do have to make certain it is spooling off in the right direction...get it backwards and it is IMMEDIATELY obvious.

That device is the only way to do it right. Best way for people without it(basically everyone) is to lay the spool down on the floor to where the line comes off counter clockwise. Do not use the pencil method nor that other devise pictured farther above.

I just let the spool flop around on the floor still in the box, but immediately after I pull out all the line across the yard with nothing tied to the end, and reel it back up so it can untwist itself.

I have one of these exact things, and there is nothing better for spooling a spinning reel. Where the spool sits actually spins, and it completely eliminates line twist... It does get a little tough dealing with 6000 series on up.

In over 50 years of fishing I never conquered putting line off a spool onto a spinning reel without twist. I only used spinning tackle for finesse fishing so most of my line was 8 or 6 lb test. I finally started stretching my line out across my yard and keeping it tight through my fingers until my spool was full that worked for me but I had a big yard. Another way to get rid of twist if you are on the water is to let the line out behind your boat without a lure on it and troll a little ways. It will take all the twist out of your line. Either way is a pain but both ways will eliminate twist.

If not for the fact that I have gone to braid/nanofil/gliss exclusively, I would own one of those. A must for mono and horrible arse fluorocarbon.

Not that its the correct thing to do, but I was taught to toss spool in a shoe box and close lid over line so it creates slight tension on line. Sometimes I slit the box with razor blade and floss the line into it. Then allow the spool to flop around in the shoe box as you spool up the line.

On first trip using a boat or kayak, don't tie anything on the line and let it out while trolling 3-4mph. Pull out 100-200yds of line and let it drag behind the boat, again without anything tied to end, just drag line. The friction of the water passing over the line will remove any twists. While still trolling along, reel in line.

This has worked for me for mono, flouro and braid. Admittedly, I'm pretty lazy and use braid 90% of the time so I'm rarely spooling anymore.

I typically leave the spool flat on the ground, and place something on top as a weight. run the line thru my eyes and too the spool. Then I run the line thru a towel to add pressure. It is not perfect but seems to work well. I also like to run the line behind the boat, if I think about it.

Everything I own has braid now. Its so much easier and so much stronger. I dont worry about breaking anything off anymore.

I have taken to having reels spooled at a tackle shop. It is about the same price as buying it and doing it yourself and the machines they use are far better at keeping the tension right etc. I still do it myself in a pinch but if I know I am going somewhere special and have time I'll take them to a tackle shop and get them spooled properly.
