Even my rattlesnake is reluctant to strike. He's a nasty little fricker - always rattling and posturing - but I've never seen him strike in the 8 months I've had him. Even when I stick my hands in there to refill his water bowl, he doesn't strike. And of course every moron who sees him has to bang on the glass to try to get him to strike.

Anyone know what kind of snake this is? My gf just sent me this and said her mom killed it on their back porch

Hognose. Literally the tamest breed of snake I've ever seen, and one of the best for a pet. We used to try to make them bite us just to see if one would, but could never get them to bite.

I just want to know where the line is.

I've killed a few non-venomous ones, but I generally do not and have felt bad the few times I have.

But are we really saying you shouldn't kill copperheads because they likely won't cause you to DIE? I exterminate mosquitos and rodents like a man possessed. Copperheads can result in a really, really bad day/week/month/year.

I saw this thread when it was only one page. I guess it's safe to assume the following 4 pages are people who don't have ridiculous fears arguing with those that are afraid they're going to be attacked by snakes? The usual snake thread?

If it's on your property I can understand getting rid of a venomous snake. But if you come across it in the wild, where they live, there is zero reason for killing it just because you're scared of it.

Of course.

"I'm against killing spike bucks, jake turkeys, alligator snapping turtles, 6-lb bass, and female mallards, but I think every snake on the planet should die" is about what I get from all of these.

yes, and somehow, despite knowing this, the usual players(including myself) can't resist arguing. it's sad.

I have no problem with killing any of those as long as it is done legally.

I've got 5 days in the hospital and a toe that nearly needed to be amputated that says you're wrong. Sixth grade, getting out of parents swimming pool. Stepped right on him, clinched up my toes and his head got stuck between my toes. Five days in the hospital, my man. Foot was black and the size of a damn football. Couldn't walk on it for weeks.

Your mice and rats and such head for the hills when they see or hear a human coming. Copperheads don't rattle, or show a white mouth to give you a warning.

Well you stepped on him...

Copperheads are known for dry bites or bites with little venom. You freaked him out.

The hognose I had was by far the best snake ever. I never figure out how to get it to eat, so had to let him go.

The only other I have had even close to that tame was a mud snake. Same feeding problem though.

I've heard they can be picky. I kept one for a few days when I was a kid, but never tried to feed him. Was yours an eastern or western? I've heard the westerns are a little easier in captivity. I'm temped every time I see babies in the local pet store.

We had a rainbow snake in college we couldn't get to eat either. Had amphiumas, crawfish, small mud snake, all kinds of stuff. Ended up letting her go for that reason. Was terrible, but definitely the coolest snake I've ever had.

Pretty sure Eastern. It had more color than any specimen I've seen on an image search.

Apparently there's also a "southern" hognose. I don't know that much about the subspecies. I do know they vary quite a bit in color.
